The following is a transcription of the will provided to me and made by John F Howes - March 2013

In the name of god Amen the nyne and twentith daye of Jannarye in the yeare of our Lord God one thowsand sixe hundred and seaventene I Peter Wicking of Cowden in the Countie of Kent, taylor considering that all fleshe and blood is subiect to mortalitie and the houre of Death uncertayne doe therefor here in my reasonable healthe and perfect memorye make and ordayne this my last will and testament in manner and forme following that is to say ffirst I commend my soule unto God my maker whensoever yt shall please him to sever the same from my bodye with most assured faithe and hope of salvation thereof by the meritts of my Crucified Savyorre Jesus Christe: And I let my bodye to be commited to the earth within the churchyard of Cowden before sayed whensover the same my god to call me out of this synnefull world with the like faithe and hope of resurrection to eaternall life:
Item I give unto the poore of Cowden aforesayed sixe shillings and eight pence to be distributed amongst them at my buryall at the discretion of my overseers hereafter named;
Item I will that all my lands and tenements within the counties of Kent and Sussex (except one little house or tenement with garden plott with thappurtenances scituate and beying in Cowden Streete which I purchased of one Philipp Turner now in the tenant or occupation of one George Beard shalbe absolutelie sould and conveyed by my said overseers to such person or persons and theire heires to theire only use as shall give most money for the same to paye the legacies and portions hereafter granted to my sonnes and daughters.
Item I will that the said overseers shall paye all the same money that they shall receive for my lands and tenements as aforsayed unto Kateryne my now wife as they shall or may receyve the same my she my sayed wife entering into bound and becoming bound therein her selfe ---- in a competent summe of money unto my sayed overseers to paye for every of my sayed children the sevrall legacies and porcons bequeathed to them at the tymes hereafter limited for payment of the same; And if my sayed wife shall refuse to enter into suche bond then my will is that my sayed overseers shall detayyne from her all the sayed money which they shall receyve as aforsayed and put fourthe the same to the use and for the most profitt of my said children;
Item I will that my sayed wife entering into bond as aforesayed (and for default thereof) my sayed overseers shall paye to my sayed children theire sayed legacys and portions in manner and forme as they are hereafter bequeathed unto them; that is to saye ffirst I will and bequeath to be payed unto of the said money to be receyved  for my sayed lands and tenements unto John my eldest sonnet woe and twentie pounds of lawfull English money to be payed hym within one yeare next after my decease
Item I will and bequeath to be payed more unto of the said money to be receyved  for my sayed lands and tenements unto every of my sonnes viz; Thomas, Edward, Nichlas, Peter and Richard twentie pounds a peece to be payed to them at their sevrall full age of one and twentie yeares or within sixe days next after their after suche theire ages; Nevertheless my will and meaning is that in consideration thereof every one of my sonnes John, Thomas, Edward, Nicholas, Peter and Richard shall demand theire sayed legacys and portions of money at my now dwelling house at thtymes of receipt therof aforesayed and shall then and there and as thiere dede deliver one writing wherein every one of them in one forme of lawe doe away release right and title of every of them and in all my sayed lands and tenements before written to be soulde unto suche person or persons and theire heires as in the sayed writing shall by my sayed overseers be no’ iated  and appoynted or otherwise or if they my sayed sonnes or any of them shall refuse so to doe then my will is that the sayed portion and portions, legacy and legacys of all and every of them so refusing shallbe detained from them untill they and every of them so refusing shall seale and deliver the sayed writing of release as aforesayed;
Item I give and will more to be payed out of the sayed money to be receyved for my sayed lands and tenements every of my three daughters Dorothie, Jane and Judith eleaven pounds a peece to be payed them at theire severall full ages of one and twentie yeares or at the severall days of theire marrisge which shall first happen;
Item my will and meaning is that if any of my said sonnes and daughters or if any of them shall happen to dye before the time or tomes of payment of their sayed severall portions of money as aforesayed then the sayed portion or portions of hym, her or them so dying shalbe equallie devided and payed unto the survivors of them;
Item I will that if all the aforesyed money my sayed overseers shall receyve for my sayed lands and tentes before appoynted to be sould shall not be sufficient to pay therewith all the legacys of money thereout given as aforesayed then my executrix hereafter named shall pay all the residue that be wanting to make up every of the sayed legacys Or if the sayed money to be receyved of my sayed lands and tenements shall amount to more than to paye the sayed legacys then I will that all the Enristusage ? thereof shall be payed unto the sayed Katheryne my wife;
Item I give and bequeath unto the sayed Katheryne my wife my little house or tenement and garden plott before exempted to have and to hould during her naturall life: And after her death I will the same little house or tenement and garden plott with thappurtenances shall remayne and come unto Nicholas my sonne and his heires for ever;
Item I give and bequeath out of my goods unto my children and others all their legacys following: that is to say I give and bequeath thereonto unto the syed John my sonne three payre of sheetes and five shillings in money to be payed and delivered to hym within one yere next after my decease;
Item I give and bequeath every of my sonnes Thomas, Edward, Nicholas, Peter and Richard five shillings a peece and twoe payre of sheetes a peece to be payed and delivered them at theire severall full ages of one and twentie yeres;
Item I give and bequeath every of my daughters viz; Dorothie, Jane and Judith twoe payre of sheetes a peece to be payed and delivered them at theire severall full ages of one and twentie yeres or ath day of theire marriage which shall first happen;
Item I give unto Mary my daughter twentie shillings and unto Mary her daughter twelve pence;
Item I give unto Elizabeth my daughter twentie shillings and unto every her children now living twelve pence;
Item I freelie forgive unto one Simms? Jesop husband of my sayed daughter Elizabeth all that dett of fower and thirtie shillings which he oweth me:
Item I give and bequeath unto Katheryne my wife the lease of my now dwelling house and all the buildings and lands therewith to me devised to have and to hold the same wth all my rights therein during all the tearme that shalbe coming the same after my decease;
Item all my goods and chattels whatsoever not before bequeathed (my detts, legacys and funerall expenses payed and discharged) I give and bequeath unto the sayed Katheryne my wife on codition that she shall seale and as her deed deliver one writing wherein she shall release all her rights and titles in all the lands and tenemts with thappurtenances before appoynted to be sould unto suche person or persons and heire or heires absolutelie as my sayed overseers or one of them shall appoint in the sayed writing of release so and at suche tyme as the sayed my wife shalbe rightsted by my sayed overseers or one of them to seale and deliver the same and not otherwise;
Also I make and ordayne the sayed Katheryne my wife the sole executrix of this my last will and testament.
And I make and ordayne and hartilie praye my wellbeloved Cosin Edward Swaysland and Thomas Wicking my son-in-lawe to be myne overseers of this my last will and testament to see the same well and truly performed and to whome I give towards theire paynes to be taken in that behalf fyve shillings a peece ; And I will that all the charges that they shalbe at abowt needful business touching this my last will shalbe borne and payed them by my said executrix the premisses not withstanding;
In witness whereof to this my present last will and testament I the sayed Peter Wicking (revoking hereby all former wills) have sett my hand and seale the day and yere first before written in the presence of Robert Hedley scrivener and John Pigott.
