The following is a transcription of the will provided to me and made by John F Howes - February 2013

In the name of God Amen the tenth day of June in the yeere of or Lord god one thousand five hundred foureskore and nyneteene I Edward Payne thelder of Eastgrinsted in the County of Sussex yeoman beinge sick in Body but of good and p’fect memory doe make this my last will and testament in manner and forme following. That is to say ffirst and foremost I bequeath my soule to Allmightie God my creator trusting to bee saved by the onely merits of Jesus Christ my Redeemer.
Item I will to George Payne my sonne and to his heires forever all that my house and Burgage wth thappurtenances on the Burrough of Eastgrinsted now in Robert Bowyers occupacon and of his assignes. And all the freehold lands wth thappurtenances called Cookes Crofte and Cookes meade in Eastgrinsted aforesaid now in the occupacon of John Harman and Edward Cole.
Item I will and give unto Suzan Payne my sonne Edwards daughter and to her heires for ever, all that my yeerely rent and annuities of five pounds by the yeere which I late had of one John Alfrey the younger by assignnement of one William Alfrey of Hartfield and all evidences and conveyances concerning the same to have and to hold the same annuities & yerely rents to the onely use of the said Suzan her heires and assignes for ever.
All the residue of my goods and chattells I give and bequeath wholy unto Katherin my wife whom I make & ordayne my sole Executrix of this my last will and testament.
And overseer hereaft I make John Tye.
I the said Edward Payne senior have to this my present testament and last will sett my handthe day and yeere first above written Signed Edward Payne.
Read, sealed, published and delivered in the presence of John Goodwyne , John Undrhill?, Will Borer, Edward Goodwyne, Richard Woodman, Nicholas Terry.
