The following is a transcription of the will provided to me and made by John F Howes - March 2013

In the name of God amen the twentieth day of March annoqh domi 1696 I Abraham Nicholas of Westhothly in the County of Sussex yeoman being sick in body but of good and perfect memory praise be to Allmighty god doe make and ordaine my last will and testament in manner and forme following. First I bequeath my spirit unto Allmighty god my maker and to Jesus Christ my blessed redeemer hoping that through the his merits I shall be received unto etternall glory and my body I comit to the Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executor hereafter named and as touching my worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased god to bless me I doe dispose thereof as followeth viz first I give and bequeath unto the poore people of the parish of Ardinglie the sum of twenty shillings to be distributed amongst them by my Executors within one month next after my decease. Also I give and bequeath unto the poore people of the parish of westhothly the like sum of twenty shillings to be payed by my Executors within one month next after my decease.
Item I give and bequeath unto my grandson John Payne the sum of ten shillings and allso his sister Elizabeth Payne the like sum of ten shillings to be payed by my Executors within sixe months after my decease.
Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Stoner, wife of Thomas Stoner now of late deceased the sum of forty pound being part of the portion wch I promised to her husband upon mariage which remaines unpayed.
It I give and bequeath unto Thomas Stoner, Abraham Stoner and John Stoner sons of my daughter Stoner and to Elizabeth Stoner, Sarah Stoner, Hannah Stoner and Mary Stoner daughters of my daughter Stoner the sum of ten shillings by every of them to be payed by my Executors within six emonths after my decease.
Itm I give and bequeath unto the children of my daughter Hannah Dungate at being viz Joseph, Sarah, Hannah, Elizabeth, Mary and Ann the like sum of ten shillings to every of them to be payed by my Executors within sixe months after my decease.
Item I give and bequeath unto the three children of my son Abraham Nicholas of Ardinglie viz Abraham, William and Ann the like sum of ten shillings to every of them to be payed within sixe months after my decease.
Item I give and bequeath unto my said sonne Abraham Nicholas all and singular my messuage, lands, tenements and hereditaments with their appurtenances whatsoever and wheresoever to have and to hold to my said sonne Abraham his heires and assignes for ever Except those two pasells of land viz that my messuage, barne and sevrall p’cells of land in Cuckfeild in the occupation of Richard Aynscombe and known by the name of Pendland and allso that other p’cell of land being one messuage and barne called hoggstrood and sevrall p’cells of land situtat, lying in westhoyhly I give unto my said sonn Abraham Nicholas and my grandsonn John payn and their heires willing and appointing them to sell the same for raising of money to pay my debts and legaces and if the money rising by the sale of the said messuage and lands and personall estate will not be sufficient to payy my debts and legacyse then I will and apoynt that my Executors  cut and sell soe much of underwoods as may raise moneyse for the doinge thereof
and I doe nominate and appoint my said sonne Abraham Nicholas and my grandson John Payne to be my Executors of this my last will and rtestament
and I doe give and bequeath unto my said sonne Abraham Nicholas all the residue of my goods, cattells and chattels whatsoever my debts and legacies first paid and my funeral expenses and probat of my will payed and discharged and that my last will and testament in all things well and faithfully performed
I doe declare and publish this to be my very true and last will and testament and doe utterly revoke all former wills by me made and published in testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my hand and seale.
