The following is a transcription of the will provided from the SFHG library - Transcribed by Natalie Lerner April 2005

In the name of God Amen, the fourteenth day of December in the twentieth year of the reign of Charles sovereign king of England of ….did Richard Carpenter of Barcombe in the County of Sussex yeoman, being sick in body but of good and perfect memory, thanks be to Almighty God, do make and constitute, ordain and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following,….. and annulling all former wills by me made and declared either by word or in writing and now for settling my temporal estate and sure goods chattels and debts that it hath pleased God far above my deserts to bestow upon me, I do ordain give and  dispose of in same manner and form following(that is to say I will that all those debts… and duties and … in which … friends to any manner of person…) whatsoever shall be well and fairly paid when convenient by me  after my decease by my executors hereinafter named.
Item I will and bequeath unto the poor people of Chailey thirty shillings to be paid unto them with in … months of my decease.
Item I give and bequeath unto the poor people of the parish of Barcombe ten shillings to  be paid unto them within twelve months of my decease.
Item I give and bequeath all my lands in Newick called Montfley being eight acres and a half and all my lands lying in the parish of….. called Brirdfield being eight acres and a half unto my loving son Richard Carpenter of Chailey and Andrew Thatcher of Beddingham to be sold by them for the satisfaction of my debts.
I give and bequeath unto my loving wife a bedstead mattress , bed bolster, blankets, coverlet and curtains  standing in my house in Chailey and also … pairs of sheets one dozen of …. and forty shillings of lawful money of England to be paid to her within … months after my decease. 
Item I will and bequeath unto my son William Carpenter, Susan his wife , John Carpenter……………………………
I give unto my daughter Kenward of …… six shillings and to Nicholas Kenward……… and William Kenward and Nicholas their children…….
Item I give unto Mary Carpenter, my daughter thirty pounds of lawful money of England to be paid unto her within twelve months after my decease.
Item I give unto Thomas Carpenter,my son, a bedsted , mattrass and…. standing in the parlour chamber in my now dwelling house called the Tubbs and standing in the parlour all those my goods and chattels whatsoever
I give unto John Carpenter and Thomas Carpenter my sons and them I make my …. sole executors of this my last will and testament and my loving sons Richard Carpenter and Andrew Thatcher my… overseers of this my last will and testament and I give them ten shillings apiece.
In writing where I have set my hand and seal the day and year abovesaid. Richard Carpenter . his mark and seal. published and declared and sealed in the presence of Thomas Smith, Richard Carpenter Andrew Thatcher.
