Richard Underhill and Mary Tapsell were one of my 8th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

Richard Underhill was baptised on 3rd June 1688 in Lingfield, Surrey. He was the son of John Underhill & Elizabeth Kent. He married Mary Tapsell on 5th Janauary 1716 in Horne, Surrey. He was buried on 28th October 1748 in Horne, Surrey ('aged 60').

Mary Tapsell was possibly baptised on 24th March 1689 in Horley, Surrey. She was the daughter of Thomas Tapsell. She was probably buried on 23rd May 1773 in Horne, Surrey.

  2. Mary Underhill was baptised on 24th November 1717 in Horne, Surrey. She probably married William Neal on 10th February 1741 in Horne, Surrey.
  3. John Underhill was baptised on 8th March 1719 in Horne, Surrey
  4. Richard Underhill was baptised on 27th September 1723 in Horne, Surrey

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. Family possibly came from Godstone, Lingfield or Crowhurst.
  2. No earlier parish records found for 'Underhill' in the adjacent parishes of Burstow, Charlwood, Horley or Worth
  3. The Richard identified in Lingfield has a year of birth consistent with the death information (died 1748 aged 60) so is very likely to be correct. No other Richards have yet been found for this period.
  4. There was also a Mary Tapsell born on 26/02/1686 in Charlwood the daughter of John
  5. No 'Mary Tapsell' found in East Grinstead or Lingfield parish records, but a number of other Tapsell's exist.
