Amos Shirley (1835) & Lucy Stripp

General History

Amos Shirley & Lucy Stripp were not one of my direct ancestors but they are related to me as later indirect generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

Amos Shirley was baptised on 8th November 1835 in Godstone, Surrey. He was the son of Richard Shirley who was the son of William Shirley (see William Shirley 1766 ref 8 D for details). He married Lucy Stripp on 17th October 1860 in Blindley Heath, Surrey. In 1871 they were living at Cottage on Common, Blindley Heath; in 1881 they were living at Blindley Heath common and in 1891 they were living at Bauks Cottage, Blindley Heath. Amos died in about February 1919 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 83').

Lucy Stripp was born on 3rd August 1837 in Tandridge, Surrey. She was the daughter of William Stripp who was the son of Richard Stripp who was the son of William Stripp. (See William Stripp 1715 family ref 6Av for details). Lucy died in about February 1913 in Godstone RD, Surrey (aged 75').

Amos & Lucy had sixteen children.

  1. Eliza Shirley was born in about May 1862 in Godstone RD, Surrey (shown as Sherley in Bmd).
  2. Robert Shirley was baptised on 10th July 1863 in Godstone, Surrey.
  3. William Shirley was born in about May 1865 in Godstone RD, Surrey.
  4. Thomas Shirley was born in about May 1866 in Godstone RD, Surrey. He married Ellen Sharp on 8th December 1889 in Bromley, Kent (marriage certificate shows father as Amos Shirley (labourer) and Thomas as aged 23. He was living at Wharton Road, Bromley Kent).
  5. Emma Shirley was baptised on 9th April 1867 in Godstone, Surrey.
  6. George Shirley was born in about May 1867 in Godstone RD, Surrey.
  7. John Shirley was born in about August 1869 in Godstone RD, Surrey.
  8. Mary Shirley was baptised on 8th November 1870 in Godstone, Surrey.
  9. Joseph Shirley was born in about February 1872 in Godstone RD, Surrey.
  10. Lucy Shirley was baptised on 25th March 1874 in Godstone, Surrey.
  11. Harriet Shirley was baptised on 14th July 1875 in Godstone, Surrey.
  12. Esther Shirley was baptised on 9th November 1876 in Godstone, Surrey. She married Edward Percy B S Dean on 26th October 1907 in Fulham, London. Edward & Esther had two children (Lilian Esther & Ivy Bolitho)
  13. Emily Shirley was baptised on 21st November 1877 in Godstone, Surrey.
  14. Fanny Shirley was baptised on 22nd August 1879 in Godstone, Surrey.
  15. Amos Shirley was baptised on 28th October 1880 in Godstone, Surrey.
  16. Amy Shirley was baptised on 23rd October 1883 in Godstone, Surrey.

The families of Strip/Streape and Shirley tend to very interconnected with marriages between them and also the families living adjacent to each other. The families tend to be based around the Surrey/Sussex border at Copthorne, Horne (Frogit Heath) and Blindley Heath. Looking at the parish map one can see that the parishes of Tandridge, Godstone & Horne all merge at this point and also are adjacent to Worth & East Grinstead. Frogit Heath is actually in Horne & Godstone parishes and Blindley Heath is actually in Horne, Godstone, Tandridge & Lingfield parishes. The location is some distant from the
