David Sale & Martha Hodsoll were one of my 7th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

David Sale was baptised on 11th October 1697 in Sunridge, Kent (about 1 mile from Bessels Green , Sevenoaks). He was the son of David Sale & Elizabeth. He married Matha Hodsoll on 28th February 1728 in Fleet Prison, London. ( unconfirmed)

Matha's birth details are not known.

  2. Martha Sale was baptised 18th February 1731 in possibly Brasted, near Sundridge, Kent
  3. Elizabeth Sale was baptised 21st March 1733 in in possibly Brasted, near Sundridge, Kent. She married John Colegate. Details of John Colegate & Elizabeth Sale are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
  4. James Sale was baptised 29th April 1735 in possibly Brasted, near Sundridge, Kent
  5. Hodsel Sale was baptised 25th April 1737 in possibly Brasted, near Sundridge, Kent
  6. Robert Sale was baptised 18th June 1739 in possibly Brasted, near Sundridge, Kent. Presumably had a son :
    1. Robert Sale was born around 1760 (derived as no birth record found). He married Elizabeth and they had seven known children (unsure whetherthey were all born in Limpsfield, but baptised at Bessells Green). He was buried on 16th May 1803 at Bessells Green ('aged 43').
      1. Elizabeth Sale was baptised 22nd June 1786 in Limpsfield, Surrey.
      2. Mary Ann Sale was baptised 10th October 1788 in Limpsfield, Surrey
      3. Robert Sale was baptised 29th September 1790 in Limpsfield, Surrey
      4. Martha Sale was baptised 23rd January 1793 in Limpsfield, Surrey
      5. Jane Sale was baptised 5th December 1794 in Limpsfield, Surrey. She was buried on 2nd February 1818 at Bessells Green ('aged 23').
      6. Sarah Sale was baptised 14th January 1797 in Limpsfield, Surrey. She was buried on 4th May 1812 at Bessells Green ('aged 15').
      7. Sophia Sale was baptised 4th April 1799 in Limpsfield, Surrey
  7. Sarah Sale was baptised 8th March 1742 in possibly Brasted, near Sundridge, Kent

David & Martha were members of the Baptist church at the Meeting House, in Bessells Green, near Sevenoaks, This was in the parish of Chevening. Some records derive from Chevening and some from Bessells Green. A lot of baptismal dates are of adults joining the new church (set up in 1714)

David was baptised on 2nd October 1720. His son David Sale Junior was baptised on 21st October 1750.(or was this another son of david)

  1. Unsure whether that dates shown are birth dates or baptismal dates.
  2. Some references to name shows it as 'Sael' rather than 'Sale'
  3. A number of other Sale's are referred to in the church records. (James Sale-baptised 6/8/1721 died 11/12/1742; Samuel Sale died 28/11/1747, Samuel buried 14/3/1743 and his wife Mary buried 2/12/1747
  4. Robert Sale (1760) may have been the son of another person and not Robert (1713)-needs to be clarified
