Robert Payne & Sarah Faulconer were one of my 9th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

Robert Payne was baptised on 7th February 1656 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was the son of William Payne & Susan Stacey. He was named in Sarah Dungate's 'Will' of 1667 and he married Sarah Faulconer on 16th September 1679 in West Hoathly. Robert was probably buried on 19th January 1737 in East Grinstead, Sussex.


Sarah Faulconer was the daughter of Henry Faulconer & Elizabeth Dungate. She was baptised on 13th January 1660 in East Grinstead but was born in Balcombe on 3rd January. She was named in her fathers ‘Will’of 1686 and in her grandfather’s ‘Will’ of 1680 as under 21. She was named in her aunt's Sarah Dungate's 'Will' of 1667.

  1. Robert Payne was baptised on 12th October 1680 in East Grinstead, Sussex. Named in grandfathers Henry Faulconer’s ‘Will’ of 1697 and inherited ‘Newcombe’ under this will after the death of Henry’s wife. He was named in father’s ‘Will’ of 1738. It is thought that he married Margaret. Details of Robert Payne & Margaret are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
  2. Elizabeth Payne was baptised on 11th April 1684 in East Grinstead, Sussex. Named in grandfathers Henry Faulconer’s ‘Will’ of 1697. She was probably buried in East Grinstead on 7th November 1687 (‘ A young maid’).
  3. Mary Payne was baptised on 31st December 1686 in East Grinstead, Sussex. Named in grandfathers Henry Faulconer’s ‘Will’ of 1697 and in father’s ‘Will’ of 1738.
  4. Sarah Payne was baptised on 26th April 1692 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was named in grandfathers Henry Faulconer’s ‘Will’ of 1697 and in fathers ‘Will’ of 1738. Possibly married James Atkinson in about 1715 .(mentioned in Robert’s ‘Will’ of 1738).
  5. William Payne was baptised on 11th February 1696 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was named in grandfathers Henry Faulconer’s ‘Will’of 1697.
  6. Henry Payne was baptised on 28th February 1699 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was named in fathers ‘Will’ of 1738.
  7. Edward Payne was baptised on 18th November 1701 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was named in fathers ‘Will’ of 1738.

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. There were three Sarah Faulconer's found for the period 1636-1663 : -(Sources 2 & 5);  (Age 16 at marriage to age 50 at birth of eldest child)
    1. 3/1/1660 - Balcombe daughter of Henry & Elizabeth. Robert Payne was named in Father in laws Henry’s ‘Will’  (source 1), so this person is definitely correct.
    2. 16/2/1657 - Balcombe, daughter of Edward & Sarah: Died 11/11/1727 in West Hoathly. Left 'Will' proved 24/11/1727
    3. 9/3/1646 - Balcombe:  Daughter of John Faulkner (2nd marriage) and Elizabeth Payne. She married Ninian Creasy on 26/10/1669.
  2. There were three Robert Payne's born in the period 1641-1663 : -(Sources 2 &5); (Age 16 at marriage to age 60 at birth of eldest child - however as he died in 1738 the age range is likely to be 1653-1663 ).
    1. 7/2/1656 - East Grinstead : son of William & Susan.
    2. 17/5/1660 - East Grinstead: son of Henry & Mary (of West Hoathly)
    3. 7/8/1647 - West Hoathly: son of Henry & Mary (buried 16th April 1657)

The Robert of 1656 is the most likely as he was mentioned in Sarah Dungate's will (see Stephen Dungate 1590) who also mentioned Sarah Faulconer so these two are previouly linked. In addition Roberts second son was William , probably named after his father and Robert lived within 3Km of West Hoathly where he was married.
Henry was also probably related to the family so this parentage is not guanateed- There were also Robert Payne's born on 8/7/1632, 20/4/1634, 14/9/1634  & 14/10/1635 all in East Grinstead - but it is assumed that these were too old to marry a woman of 19 in 1679 and live to 1738

Wills

  1. Robert Payne of East Grinstead left a 'Will' (Ref: LEWES A55 p262) that was dated 10/07/1735 and was proved 5/10/1738. The ‘Will’ mentions wife Sarah, daughter Mary, sons Edward, Henry and Robert and Sarah (wife of James Atkinson-presumably his daughter) . No mention is made of  William.
