General History

Stephen Dungate & Joan Humpfrey were one of my 12th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

Stephen Dungate (Dungat) was baptised on 30th April 1565 in East Grinstead, Sussex. His parents were not shown but it is probable that he was the son of John Dungate & Elizabeth (but see concerns below). Stephen married Joan Humphrey (Johane Humffrie) on 24th April 1588 in East Grinstead, Sussex (shown as Dungatt). Stephen was probably buried on 18th January 1628 in East Grinstead, Sussex

Joan Humphrey was probably baptised on 1st February 1568 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was maybe possibly the daughter of Richard Humphrey & Margaret Beven who were married on 14th August 1561.

  3. Joan Dungate (Johane Dungat) was baptised on 20th July 1595 in East Grinstead, Sussex (no parents shown). She probably married Edward Jenner on 10th October 1615 in East Grinstead, Sussex (shown as Joane Dungat). There was a child of a child called Mary Jenner (under 21) who was mentioned in Sarah Dungate's 'Will' of 1666.

  1. In a deed dated April 9th, 1609, Stephen Dungate appears as owner of lands near Saint Hill (source 5),

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. There were numerous differant spellings of "Dungate" in the parish registers. eg Dungatt, Dungat, Dunget, Dungete Dungatte
  2. Stephen is shown as the son of John because the choice of Stephen's first sons name as John and the subsequent naming of two other sons as John, implies that John was an important figure in Stephen's life and was probably his father.
  3. Edward Dungate son of Stephen was baptised on same day with same name as Edward son of Thomas so may be an error.
