Thomas Rivers Comber & Anne Burstow were one of my 12th generation ancestors.

Thomas Rivers Comber was born around 1570, probably in West Hoathly, Sussex.. He was the son of Thomas Rivers Comber. He married Anne Burstow on 10th April 1596 in Slaugham, Sussex and they lived at ‘Philpots’ (also known as Barleylands), West Hoathly. Thomas left a 'Will' dated 3rd November 1632. He was buried on 25th February 1633 in West Hoathly, Sussex.(' an aged man') and Ann was probably buried there on 5th December 1635 ('an old woman')

Anne Burstow birth details are not known, but she was possibly born about 1570. She was the daughter of William Burstow who probably lived in Slaugham, Sussex.

  1. Thomas Comber was probably born in West Hoathly, Sussex. He married Elizabeth Feldwick, daughter of William Feldwick & Agnes Brown (family ref 4), on 1st December 1625 ( license issued at Lewes on 29th November- Elizabeth shown as 'Velvicke' and suriety by Thomas Stoner). Thomas was overseer to his father in law William Feldwick in 1628, he was a church warden of West Hoathly in 1634/5 and executor to his father in 1633 when he inherited Philpots and Barleys. Thomas died in August 1642 (he left a 'Will' dated 14th August and proved 22nd September 1642) and Elizabeth was buried on 3rd March 1664 in West Hoathly ('a widow'). Thomas & Elizabeth had four children.
    1. Thomas Comber was baptised on 19th November 1627 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He married Elizabeth and had six children. Elizabeth was buried on 15th November 1671 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('wife of Thomas') and Thomas was buried there on 16th April 1673. Thomas & Elizabeth had six children.       1. Elizabeth Comber was baptised on 3rd June 1656 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
      2. Thomas Comber was baptised on 30th July 1659 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was probably buried on 21st June 1678 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('of London').
      3. Philip Comber was born about 1661 possibly in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was probably buried on 16th May 1690 in West Hoathly, Sussex.He married Mary and had four children.
      4. Nathanial Comber was born about 1663 possibly in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was probably buried on 8th August 1728 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
      5. John Comber was born about 1665 possibly in West Hoathly, Sussex.

    4. Philip Comber was baptised on 12th October 1634 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
  2. Catherine Comber was born about 1602 in West Hoathly, Sussex.. She married Thomas Brown. Details of Thomas Browne & Catherine Comber are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
  3. Sarah Comber was born after 1607 in West Hoathly, Sussex. She died in about 1672. She was mentioned as under 25 in her father's will of 1632. She was Executor to her sister Elizabeth in 1642. She left a 'Will' that was dated 6th May 1662 and was proved on 28th April 1673. Will administered by John Payne and John Pryor (Thomas Comber the nephew named as executor being dead).
  4. Elizabeth Comber was born in West Hoathly, Sussex. She died in August 1642. She was mentioned in her fathers 'Will' of 1632 and in brother Thomas's will of 1642. She left a 'Will' dated 19th August 1642 and proved 22nd September 1642 (Lewes, South Malling F 112)
  5. Philip Rivers Comber was born in West Hoathly, Sussex. Married firstly Elizabeth and had four children (A-D). Married secondly Dorothy Hounsell (of St Clements-Danes- bands published there 29th January 1654), and had three children (E-G). He left a will dated 15th November 1680 and proved 17th December 1680 (PCC 162 Bath)
    1. Sarah Comber was baptised at St Martins, Ludgate on 27th January 1641 and buried there on 9th March 1642
    2. Philip Comber was baptised at St Martins, Ludgate on 6th May 1644 and buried there on 16th February 1648.
    3. Thomas Comber was baptised at St Martins, Ludgate on 23rd December 1655
    4. Elizabeth Comber was mentioned her father's will of 1680. She married John Partridge
    5. Benjamin Comber was mentioned his father's will of 1680
    6. Susanna Comber was baptised at St Martins, Ludgate on 25th December 1660
    7. Anna Comber was baptised at St Martins, Ludgate on 26th June 1662

    4. Elizabeth Comber was baptised on 21st October 1654 in West Hoathly, Sussex. Mentioned in Uncle Philip's 'Will' of 1680. Perhaps married William Peckham on 24th February 1685 in West Hoathly, Sussex.

Thomas Rivers Comber

Thomas held property called 'Philpots' (or Barleylands) at West Hoathly, Sussex. Mentioned in Chancery proceedings of 1616 (Ser II 255/50). He was named in lawsuit of 1670.

Philip Comber

Philip made freeman of the Merchant Taylors Co by reemption on 7th February 1630. Will dated 15 November 1680 and proved 17 December 1680 (PCC 162 Bath). Mentioned in fathers 'Will' of 1632, sister's Elizabeth's 'Will' of 1642 and Sarah's 'Will' of 1662. Was oversseer to brother Thomas in 1642. Purchased lands in Hacney by fine! 1646/7 and in Faversham, Kent in 1655.

  1. The name Comber was often shown as Rivers Comber or Rivers alias Comber or Rivers COMBER or just Rivers for families up to about 1615. Families after about 1615 only used the name Comber.
  2. Catherine is shown as Comber in West Hoathly Parish Register for marriage, but as Rivers in the Lewes marriage Licenses.
