General History

William Brown & Elizabeth were not one of my direct ancestors but they are related to me as later indirect generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

William Brown was baptised on 30th June 1816 in Edenbridge, Kent. He was the son of Robert Brown & Ann Weller and Robert was the son of Jacob Brown (1754) & Sarah Wicking. He witnessed the marriage of his sister Sarah Brown in 1836. In 1841 he was a servant to Henry Smith of Hole Farm in Edenbridge and in 1842 he was assaulted by three labourers in a brawl. William married firstly Elizabeth from Leigh. He married secondly Sarah Hubbard on 30th October 1852 at Providence Chapel, Croydon. (William shown as 36 years widower labourer of No 112 Old Town Croydon, father Robert Brown, Sarah Hubbard 30 years spinster of The Green, Lower Streatham, Surrey father William Hubbard carpenter and marriage witnessed by John Dodds & Mary Lowe (Sarah's married sister)). In 1851 William & family were living in Streatham but at the time of the 1861 census William was a gardener at Beckenham Place, Kent.

Elizabeth birth details are unknown, but was possibly born in about 1817 in Leigh, Kent.

Sarah Hubbard birth details are unknown but she was the daughter of William Hubbard, carpenter.
