William & Jane had seven known children:

Richard John Mary Henry Emma William James
  1. Richard William Brown was born in Murell Common, Oxted and was baptised on 31st January 1830 in Oxted, Surrey (father was a Higgler). He married Ellen who was born in Titsey, Surrey in about 1831. Richard is on 1841 & 1851 census. Richard, Ellen & Rosina were living at Downlands Cottage, Burstow at the time of the 1871 census and at time of 1881 census Richard & Ellen were living with a widowed Rosina King (presumably his daughter). In 1901 Richard & Ellen were living in Henfield, Sussex.  They probably had two children.
    1. Rosina Flora Brown was born in about November 1854 probably in Tandridge, Surrey (Godstone RD). She possibly married William King in about May 1872 in Reigate RD, Surrey. William King died in about February 1881 aged 31 in Reigate RD, Surrey.

    1. William Brown was born in about November 1863 (but maybe August), probably in Godstone, Surrey (Godstone RD). There is no entry in parish register. There were three William Brown's born in Godstone c1863 (3/1860, 8/1863,11/1863). He possibly married Alice (who was born in about 1865 in Godstone, Surrey), in about 1889. William & Alice possibly had one child who died. At the time of the 1901 census it is believed he was a Florist in Mayfield, Sussex. At the time of the 1911 census a William Brown is shown as age 47, born in Godstone, living at High Street, Mayfield, Sussex and occupation was a Florist Producer.
    2. George Brown was born in about February 1865 probably in Godstone, Surrey (Godstone RD & 1881 census). There is no entry in the parish register and no entry on the 1901 census. There were three other George Brown's born in Godstone area c1865 (2/1863, 5/1864, 11/1864). He may have married Eliza (who was born in about 1864 in Brailes, Warwickshire), in about 1899. At the time of the 1911 census a George Brown is shown as age 46, born in Godstone, and living with Eliza at The Lodge, The Pleasaunce, Limpsfield, Surrey and was a Gardener Domestic. They had no children. Alternatively, George may have married Jane in East Grinstead in 1885 and had a child there- Annie J 1888 or alternatively he may have married Ellen and was a Licensed Victualler in Banstead.
    3. Charles Brown was born in about November 1869 in Godstone, Surrey (1881 census). There is no entry in the parish register. There was only one Charles Brown born in Godstone c1869. At the time of the 1901 census it is believed he was a Bricklayers Labourer in Lewisham, London.. He possibly married Pamela (who was born in about 1870 in Cublington, Bucks), in about 1897. At the time of the 1911 census Charles Brown is shown as age 41, born in Godstone, and living at 34 Bowness Road, Catford, Lewisham and was a bricklayers labourer. They had one child..
      1. William John Brown was born in about 1898 in Catford, Kent.

He married Ada Jane, (who was born in about 1876 in Westerham, Kent), in about 1897. In 1901 & 1911 the family was living at 5 Park view, Tandridge, New Oxted, Surrey and Robert was a railway labourer. Robert & Ada had two children.
      1. Minnie Brown was born in about 1898 in Tandridge, Surrey.
      2. Charles Robert Brown was born in about 1901 in Tandridge, Surrey.
  3. Mary Brown was baptised on 23rd November 1834 in Crowhurst, Surrey. She died at Murell Common and was buried in Oxted on 16th June 1837 ('aged 2 years 9 months').
  4. Henry Brown was born on 18th September 1836 in Murell Common, Oxted, Surrey and was baptised in Oxted on 2nd October 1836. He married Mary who was born in 1836 in Crowhurst, Surrey.   They lived in Railway Cottages, Godstone in 1881; (the 1881 Census also shows a Henry Brown from Wokingham living there (age 25) with a Mary Brown age 19 from Godstone. May be an earlier daughter). Henry and Mary then lived at Upper Grouse, Lower Beeding, Colgate, Horsham at the time of the 1901 census. Henry’s occupation was then a ‘Farmer’.  In 1911 Mary was living at 95 New Street, Horsham, Sussex with her daughter Emily. Henry & Mary had eight known children:

      1. Rhoda Brown was born on 12th November 1892 (registered 12th December 1892), in Keston, Kent. She married Percy Alexander Allen sometime after WW1 and emigrated to Australia. Percy was an Australian who enlisted in 1915 and served initially at Gallipoli and then on the Western Front and almost certainly met Rhoda Brown while on leave in the UK. His ancestor Frederick Allen who originated from Kent had emigrated to Australia in pursuit of gold but quickly understood that there was more reliable income in selling goods to miners than in mining. He opened a shop on the goldfields, then a pub, then a brewery and became a man of some substance. Percy & Rhoda had five children. Their grandson Greg provided most of this information. Greg Yeaman is one of my 'Third Cousins once removed'.
      2. Ada Brown was born in about 1895 in Keston, Kent (Source is 1901 census).
      3. Henry Brown was born in about 1898 in Hayes, Kent (Source is 1911 census).

    8. James Brown was born in about November 1870 and was baptised on 11th December 1870 in Godstone, Surrey. There is no entry on the 1901 census, but there was a James shown as aged 32. There were three James Brown's born in Godstone area in c1870 (9/1868. 3/1870 & 12/1870). (Note: At the time of the 1911 census a James Brown is shown as age 40, born in Godstone, and living at Great Pardon, Essex. He was employed as a 'Butler Domestic' and they had three children but childrrens names make it seem unlikely).
  5. Emma Brown was born on 26th January 1839 in Murell Common, Oxted, Surrey and was baptised in Oxted on 17th March 1839. 1851 and 1861 census’s are inconsistent as to place of birth. She died in about December 1901.
  6. William Brown was born on 8th August 1844 in Oxted, Surrey and was baptised there on 8th September 1844. He died in about March 1900. He probably married Mary Jane Skinner on 24th September 1873 in Blindley Heath, Surrey. Mary Jane was baptised on 12th March 1854 in Godstone, Surrey the daughter of John Skinner. They had five known children.
    1. Emma Jane Brown was born in about February 1874 and was baptised on 12th April 1874 in Godstone, Surrey.

    3. William James Alfred Brown was born on 29th November 1881 and was baptised on 12th February 1882 in Godstone, Surrey. It has been suggested that William was actually born on Godstone railway station. He married Mabel Louisa Jay on 2nd July 1912 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Mabel was born on 7th July 1888 in Millbrook, Southampton, Hampshire and died on 15th February 1975 in Coulsdon, Surrey. William died in November 1926 at Westminster Bridge, London.
    4. Henry Jacob Brown was born in about August 1883 and was baptised on 12th August 1883 in Godstone, Surrey. Henry was a Farrier. He married in about 1909, Annie Alice May aged 26 who was born in Walbesich Suffolk. In 1911 he was living at 75 Derby Rd, West Croydon in a house with 5 rooms. Henry & Alice had one child.
      1. Herbert Henry William Brown was born in about 1910 in West Croydon, Surrey.

William Brown

The marriage of William to Jane Colegate was witnessed by Elizabeth Brown and William Gatland!
William & Jane initially lived at Murell Common,(or Merle Common as per modern map), Oxted until about 1831. They then moved to Crowhurst where the next two children were born and then moved back to Murell Common in about 1835. This might have been back to William’s parents house after his father had died (his mother Mary remarried Benjamin Curtis and on the 1841 census Mary & Benjamin Curtis are shown living at the house or next door). This is on the Oxted 1841 census (area south of turnpike road from Limpsfield to Godstone). His son, James  Brown, was born at Staffords Wood which is the same area (<0.5 mile). The 1841 census also shows his sister Jane ( aged 20) living with the family at Murell Common with her daughter Mary (4 mnths)
William & Jane lived at Chellows Cottage, Crowhurst in 1851 and is shown on the Crowhurst 1851 Census. This is about two miles from Murell Common. They then lived at Lagham Lodge, Tandridge Lane, Godstone (recorded for both 1861 and 1881 census’s).
He was a farm Labourer, which was also described as a ‘Higgler’.
William Brown could not write as marriage certificate was marked with a cross.
William died at Lowlands, Horne  (living with his son James Brown and Matilda) from Chronic Broncitis and Senile Decay. Age on death certificate is shown as 73 which is wrong by 1 year.

Jane Brown (Colegate)

Jane’s age  was shown as 30 in 1841 census whereas it should be 35. In later census this age is shown correctly. Jane also could possibly not write as her signature on her son James birth certificate is shown as a mark. However her signature is shown on the marriage certificate. She was deaf at time of 1881 census. She was aged 91 at death as per her death certificate and she died from Senile Decay

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. The William Brown born in 1810, Jane Colegate and the James Brown born in 1847 are definitely all valid for the Family Tree. From the census records  and the parish records the exact children can be identified even though they moved frequently.
    1. The census records put Williams’s birth date as 1810/11 and his birth place as Lingfield. For the period 1800 - 1813 (age at marriage of 16 to age 60 at birth of youngest child and taking the census ages as approximately correct), there were two William Brown's born in Lingfield, one was born in the adjacent parishes and eight others were born in the surrounding parishes. It is probable that the identified John is the correct one
      1. 08/04/1810 in Lingfield, Surrey, son of William & Mary
      2. 13/12/1801 in Lingfield, Surrey son of Jacob & Elizabeth
      3. 17/01/1808 in Edenbridge, Kent, son of James & Elizabeth
    2. The census records put Jane’s birth date as 1805/06 and her birth place as Brasted, Kent. For the period 1800 - 1813 (age at marriage of 16 to age 50 at birth of youngest child and taking the census ages as approximately correct), there was one Jane Colegate born in Brasted, one was born in the adjacent parishes and one other was born in the surrounding parishes. It is very probable that the identified Jane is the correct one
      1. 19/06/1805 in Brasted, Kent, dau of John & Mary
      2. 24/05/1805 in Bromley, Kent, dau of Robert & Sarah
      3. 16/09/1810 in West Peckham, Kent, dau of Stephen & Elizabeth
  2. Analysis of the parish registers show in fact that there were actually three “William and Jane Brown's” living in Oxted at this time. There were only two William Browns born in this period in Lingfield . The first was born 8th April 1810 son of William Brown & Mary, who in turn was possibly the son Jacob Brown & Sarah Wicking. The second William was born 13th December 1801 the son of Jacob Brown & Elizabeth Sanders, who in turn was definitely the son of Jacob Brown & Sarah Wicking.
  3. Issues do arise around the exact parentage of William (ie which William married which Mary) and this is covered in more detail under that Family Group.
