William Browne (c1610) & Elizabeth Groombridge

Border
General History

This family grouping relates to the 'East Mid- Sussex Browne's' based around Maresfield, Withyham and Rotherfield in Sussex. They are probably descended from John Browne (1510) of Maresfield .They were not one of my direct ancestors and are probably not related. It is one of the three main family groupings (Mid Sussex Browne's, the West Mid-Sussex Browne's and the East Mid- Sussex Browne's) and as their descendants form a part of the Mid Sussex & East Surrey Brown's the details are included here for completeness.

This paticular group are descended from William Browne & Elizabeth Groombridge of Withyham. At present there is no direct link between John Brown of Maresfield and William Brown of Withyham, but it believed that this will be found.

Key Dates:

William Browne birth and death dates are unknown, but was probably born around 1610. He married Elizabeth Groombridge (Gromebridge) on 19th July 1640 probably in Lewes, Sussex (License issued at Lewes- Elizabeth a spinster of Rotherfield and William from Withyham - surety Nicholas Pope of Withiham). William left a 'Will' dated and proved in 1674 and was buried on 10th March 1674 in Withyham, Sussex.

Elizabeth Groombridge birth details are unknown, but she was from Rotherfield. She is believed to be the daughter of Ralph Groombidge who died in 1646 leaving a Will. She was mentioned in her husbands 'Will' of 1674. She left a 'Will' which was dated 7th January 1684, a widow of Withyham, Sussex and she was buried on 20th February 1684 in Withyham, Sussex ('widow').

  1. Athough the details of the individual entries are correct, and the children are born to the named parents, a rigorous analysis has not yet been undertaken to ensure that the correct family heads are with the appropriate children (ie if there was a choice of father's called 'William' the wrong one may have been used). Therefore this structure should only be viewed as indicative.
  2. There were three William Brown's born in Withyham c 1682 and therefore the allocation of the marriage & family to the correct William may be wrong. However it is thought that Thomas (family 4) moved to Rotherfield for the birth of his youngest daughter and thereforeWilliam would be living in Rotherfield rather than Withyham.
  3. In general the family name BROWNE was used up to about 1700 and then BROWN became standard
