Thomas Browne (c1413) & Eleanor Fitzalan

Border
General History

Thomas Brown & Eleanor Fitzalan of Betchworth were not one of my direct ancestors and were probably not related to me. However as their descendants form a part of the Mid Sussex, East Surrey & SW Kent Brown's the details are included here for completeness. There are tenuous links to other Browne Family Groups - (see concerns-item 3)

Key Dates:

Thomas Browne was born in about 1413. He was maybe the son of Robert Browne. Robert was maybe the son of Anthony Browne who also had children Stephen (Lord Mayor of London 1439) & Joan (source 2a- but this ancestry is disputed by source 1)
Thomas was the Treasurer of the Household of King Henry VI and he was said to have been sheriff of Kent in 1444 and 1460, (but this does not agree to list of sheriffs given by Hasted-source 1).
Thomas married Eleanor Fitzalan (maybe also known as Alianor Arundel ) in about 1431, daughter of Sir Thomas Fitzalan of Betchworth (or Bechworth or Beechworth) Castle, Surrey by which marriage Betchworth Castle came into the Browne family. Betchworth is just to the east of Dorking, Surrey, but  very little of it now remains. It was  sometimes known as a Castle, but in reality was a fortified house.
Thomas was charged with High Treason by the Yorkists and was hung drawn and quartered, (with five others on the day of his conviction), on 20th July 1460 at Tyburn, London.

Eleanor Fitzalan was born about 1428 in Betchworth, Surrey. She was the daughter of Thomas Fitzalan & Joan Moyns. Thomas Fitzalan was born in about 1400 in Betchworh, Surrey the son of John Fitzalan of Arundel.

  1. For further information on the Brownes of Betchworth castle see the first few  chapters of: `The Brownes of Bechworth Castle', by John Pym Yeatman, 1903
  2. Peter Brown (Family ref 10 E 2) has been been shown on some sites as a person on the Mayflower to America in 1620. This was due to his connection to the Mullins family in Dorking who went on the Mayflower and the presence in America in 1632 of his brother John. However other sites has the Mayflower Peter Brown working/learning a trade in Leyden, Holland in 1608 which could not be this Peter Brown of Dorking. The timeline for the Horsham family fits well, the distance apart of 10-12 miles is acceptable, and I suspect is maybe a stronger link than the Mullins connection. Minor point is baptism shows name as Peeter as does the marriage record to Eleanor.
  3. Links to Betchworth Brownes: There are a number of tenuous links between other family groups and the Betchworth Browne's
    1. Peter Brown, Benjamin Browne and Walter Browne names all tie in with William Brown 1534 Family Group. These three names are relatively uncommon.
    2. Benjamin Brown name also ties in with as a witness to the Will of Andrew Brown, brother of Thomas, of West Hoathly in 1595.
    3. Bridget Browne married John Watson in Dorking in 1582. This has to be Bridget Browne of West Hoathly, daughter of Thomas whom definately married a John Watson around this time and to have two do it would be too coincidental. As Bridget had a strong family in West Hoathly, why did she marry in Dorking, unless there was a strong family connection.
