Philip Browne & Mary Wooddye were not one of my direct ancestors but they are related to me as later indirect generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

Philip Brown was born about 1610 probably in West Hoathly, Sussex (derived, but no birth records found). It is unclear who his father was. He married firstly Mary Wooddye on 31st March 1635 in Fletching, Sussex, (license issued at Lewes on 28th March , Philip shown as from West Hoathly). Philip married secondly Joan Knight (Joanne) on 1st April 1647 in West Hoathly, Sussex. Philip was buried on 21st January 1671 in West Hoathly, Sussex and Joan was buried there on 16th May 1664 ('wife of Philip').

Mary Wooddye 's birth details are unknown. She was buried on 14th September 1646 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('wife of Philip').

Philip & Mary had five known children (but possibly more due to gap in register at 1641-5).

  1. John Browne was baptised on 6th March 1636 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
  2. William Browne was baptised on 18th April 1637 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He possibly married Elizabeth Dawson on 5th November 1663 in Crowhurst, Surrey (William shown as a servant of Edward Plan, and Elizabeth a servant of Thomas Underhill). William & Elizabeth had six children.
    1. Anne Browne (Ann) was baptised on 16th October 1664 in Crowhurst, Surrey.
    2. Jane Browne was baptised on 16th November 1666 in Crowhurst, Surrey.
    3. Philip Browne was baptised on 3rd October 1668 in Crowhurst, Surrey and he was buried there on 4th October 1668 ('son of William & Elizabeth').
    4. Philip Browne was baptised on 5th April 1670 in Crowhurst, Surrey. He probably married Elizabeth Knolden on 26th April 1692 in Godstone, Surrey. It is assumed he had a son
      1. Philip Browne was born about 1700 (derived as no birth record exists). He married Mary Fielder on 10th December 1730 in Edenbridge, Kent. Mary was buried on 25th February 1764 in Tandridge, Surrey and Philip was buried there on 26th June 1769. Philip & Mary had three children.
        1. David Browne was baptised on 4th October 1731 in Tandridge, Surrey. He married Sarah Benge on 1st April 1752 in Crowhurst, Surrey.. David & Sarah had one known child.
          1. Mary Browne was baptised on 16th June 1754 in Tandridge, Surrey.
        2. John Browne was baptised on 28th July 1733 in Tandridge, Surrey and he was buried there on 2nd December 1733 (son of Philip & Mary).
        3. Hannah Browne was baptised on 25th November 1737 in Tandridge, Surrey.
    5. William Browne was baptised on 5th September 1672 in Crowhurst, Surrey.
    6. John Browne was baptised on 16th June 1676 in Crowhurst, Surrey. He possibly had a son
      1. John Browne born around 1700 (derived as no birth record exists). He married firstly Anne Tapsell on 26th October 1730 in Lingfield, Sussex. John & Anne had one child (i) and Anne was buried on 7th October 1732 in East Grinstead, Sussex ('wife of John'). John possibly secondly married Elizabeth and they had six children (ii-vii).
        1. John Brown was baptised on 7th October 1732 in East Grinstead, Sussex and he was buried there on 17th December 1732 (son of John & Anne).
        2. John Brown was baptised on 25th April 1735 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He possibly married Rose Belton on 18th October 1760 in Godstone, Surrey. Rose was buried on 5th June 1824 in Godstone, Surrey (aged 86). John & Rose had seven children.
          1. John Brown was baptised on 27th September 1761 in Godstone, Surrey. He possibly married Mary Pain on 5th December 1790 in Godstone, Surrey. John & Mary had two children.
            1. William Brown was baptised on 30th January 1792 in Godstone, Surrey.
            2. James Brown was baptised on 21st December 1794 in Godstone, Surrey.
          2. Mary Brown was baptised on 14th April 1765 in Godstone, Surrey.
          3. Sarah Brown was baptised on 11th February 1770 in Godstone, Surrey.
          4. Amy Brown (Amey) was baptised on 19th December 1772 in Godstone, Surrey.
          5. Mily Brown was baptised on 26th November 1775 in Godstone, Surrey.
          6. Hannah Brown was baptised on 16th Decemberr 1777 in Godstone, Surrey.
          7. Elizabeth Brown was baptised on 2nd January 1780 in Godstone, Surrey.
        3. Philip Brown was baptised on 23rd May 1736 in Lingfield, Surrey. He was possibly buried on 14th October 1802 in Horne, Surrey.
        4. Amy Brown (Amey) was baptised on 5th November 1738 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
        5. William Brown was baptised on 26th December 1744 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
        6. James Brown was baptised on 6th January 1748 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He maybe possibly married Ann Horsey in 1771 in Godstone, Surrey- see Jacob Brown 1712
        7. Elizabeth Brown was baptised on 21st April 1751 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
  3. Elizabeth Browne was baptised on 3rd February 1639 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
  4. Mary Browne was baptised on 15th January 1641 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
  5. Edward Browne was baptised on 15th January 1641 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He possibly married Mary Bellingbourne on 3rd September 1667 in West Hoathly, Sussex. Edward was probably buried on 9th January 1716 in West Hoathly, Sussex (' an old man'). Edward & Mary had twelve children.
    1. Mary Browne was baptised on 12th September 1668 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
    2. Margaret Browne was baptised on 23rd April 1671 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
    3. Anne Browne was baptised on 26th April 1674 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
    4. Stephen Browne was baptised on 4th March 1677 in West Hoathly, Sussex and he was possibly buried there on 5th April 1677.
    5. Fortune Browne was baptised on 27th November 1678 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
    6. John Browne was baptised on 23rd March 1681 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
    7. Elizabeth Browne was baptised on 24th June 1682 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
    8. Edward Browne was baptised on 22nd March 1684 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
    9. Anne Browne was baptised on 5th May 1686 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
    10. Jane Browne was baptised on 9th March 1688 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
    11. Thomas Browne was baptised on 22nd January 1692 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
    12. Henry Browne was baptised on 24th October 1694 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He married Jane Browne on 4th June 1730 in West Hoathly, Sussex. Jane was baptised in 1694 in West Hoathly, Sussex. (see Joseph Browne 1659). Jane was buried on 14th May 1774 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('wife of Henry aged 79'). Henry left a 'Will' proved in 1782 was buried in West Hoathly, Sussex on 9th February 1782 ('aged 87'). Henry & Jane had three children.
      1. William Browne was baptised on 1st October 1731 in West Hoathly, Sussex and he was buried there on 25th October 1754 (' aged 23').
      2. Henry Browne was baptised on 8th July 1734 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1782. He possibly married Elizabeth and had three children.
        1. Elizabeth Browne was baptised on 24th August 1755 in Worth, Sussex.
        2. Fortune Browne was baptised on 24th August 1755 in Worth, Sussex.
        3. John Browne was baptised on 23rd August 1763 in Lindfield, Sussex.
      3. John Browne was baptised on 4th April 1736 in West Hoathly, Sussex . John possibly married Mary Fenner on 14th October 1754 in Horne, Surrey. (Surrey Licenses 1673-1770 show - 11th October 1754 : John Brown of Horley, abode 2 months, miller,bachelor, 19, and Mary Fenner of Hoarn, abode 2 months, spinster,21 ; at Hoarn. Henry Brown of Hoadley, co. Sussex, miller, his father, consenting). John was possibly buried on 25th July 1762 at West Hoathly, Sussex ( 'aged 26, son of Henry'). John & Mary had three children.
        1. William Brown was baptised on 11th July 1755 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He married Anne Pattenden on 16th December 1779 in West Hoathly, Sussex. (License was issued at Lewes on 14th December - William shown as a miller aged 24 at the marriage and Ann as aged 21). William and Anne had three children. William was buried on 11th February 1784 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('aged 28') and Anne was buried there on 14th May 1786 (Ann, aged 32 from Turners Hill').
          1. Elizabeth Brown was baptised on 23rd June 1780 in West Hoathly, Sussex. She was buried there on 10th July 1780 ('infant daughter of William & Ann).
          2. Sarah Brown was baptised on 24th February 1782 in West Hoathly, Sussex. Sarah is mentioned in the 'Will' of 1792 of Richard Pattenden of West Hoathly, dated 8th June 1788 and proved 1st November 1792, He provided 'towards the support maintenance and education and bringing up Sarah Brown as being the daughter of his late niece Ann Brown deceased'.
          3. Anne Brown (Ann) was buried on 22nd February 1784 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('Ann, infant daughter of William').
        2. Sarah Brown was baptised on 5th November 1756 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
        3. Fenner Brown was baptised on 9th April 1758 in West Hoathly, Sussex. Fenner was buried on 23rd June 1845 in Worth, Sussex ('aged 86').

  1. In general the family name BROWNE was used up to about 1700 and then BROWN became standard
  2. Athough the details of the individual entries are correct, and the children are born to the named parents, a rigorous analysis has not yet been undertaken to ensure that the correct family heads are with the appropriate children (ie if there was a choice of father's called 'William' the wrong one may have been used).Therefore this structure should only be viewed as indicative.

  1. Henry Brown (Family ref 5 L) left a 'Will' that was proved in 1782 (ref Lewes A64.P446). It mentions his son Henry and granddaughter Jane.
