General History

Mary Brown was one of my 8th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

Mary Brown baptised on 14th November 1691 in Fletching, Sussex. She was the daughter of Thomas browne & susan linn of Fletching.
She had a child whilst unmarried. She then possibly married

  1. There was only one Mary Brown born in Fletching so this one is the most likely.
  2. However there two Mary Brown’s born in adjacent parishes in the years 1677-1696 (age 16-35 at birth of child). It is assumed that the Mary was unmarried to have an illegitimate child and not widowed. The possible Mary’s were  22/6/1684 East Grinstead; 9/5/1684 East Grinstead; One of these Mary’s possibly married on 24/07/1705 in East Grinstead. The other one possibly married in Withyham on 26/04/1718 or on 18/04/1721.
  3. There were also five Mary Brown’s born in more distant  parishes in the years 1677-1696. These were: 5/8/1683 Lingfield; 8/5/1686 Withyham (but possibly married in Withyham on 26/04/1718 or on 18/04/1721); 10/2/1687 Godstone; 29/11/1693 Worth, but probably died 2/10/1696; 24/9/1696 Ditchling; (sources 1-5).
  4. There was also a Thomas Brown & Mary who were described as travellers/poor travellers. They had two children in Fletching ( George 22/02/1702 and Henry 07/03/1714). They also probably had two children in Chailey (Mary 11/12/1715 & Thomas 12/12/1717, but died 22/6/1720). Questions arise here: a) are there other children between George & Henry,       b) was George born to a different family altogether, c) Was Jacob born to this Mary before she married. There was a Thomas Brown who married a Mary Fuller in Iford (south of Lewes) on 30/11/1704.
  5. In general the family name BROWNE was used up to about 1700 and then BROWN became standard
