Joseph Browne & Jane Walter were not one of my direct ancestors but they are related to me as later indirect generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

Joseph Browne was baptised on 30th September 1659 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was the son of Joseph Brown (& Elizabeth) who was the son of Joseph Brown (& Isabel) who was the son of Abel Browne (& Mary) who was the son of Thomas Browne & Elizabeth Teynton. He married Jane Walter on 31st March 1687 in Salehurst ('Joseph from West Hoathly'). He was churchwarden of West Hoathly 1699/1701. Joseph left a 'Will' dated 10th December 1708 and was buried on 21st December 1708 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('middle aged yeoman').

Jane Walter birth details are unknown but possibly came from Salehurst. She was buried on 11th February 1721 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('a widow').

  1. Joseph Browne was baptised on 29th May 1688 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's Will of 1708 as being under 24. He probably firstly married Mary Round on 25th December 1705 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He probably secondly married Elizabeth Martin on 25th November 1711 in West Hoathly, Sussex. (License issued at Lewes on 23rd November - Elizabeth was a widow). Elizabeth was buried on 28th June 1714 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('middle aged'). He possibly thirdly married Ann Bristow on 4th September 1716 in Lindfield, Sussex. (License issued at Lewes on 7th September with Joseph a Yeoman from West Hoathly and Ann Bristoe a spinster from Ardingly). He was executor to his father's will of 1708. Joseph left a 'Will' that was proven on 21st April 1738 and he was buried on 30th April 1737 in West Hoathly, Sussex. Joseph and Elizabeth had two children.
    1. Joseph Brown was baptised on 22nd April 1713 in West Hoathly, Sussex and he was buried there on 26th April 1713 (infant twins).
    2. Elizabeth Brown was baptised on 22nd April 1713 in West Hoathly, Sussex and she was buried there on 26th April 1713 (infant twins).
  2. John Browne was baptised on 10th April 1690 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's Will of 1708 as being under 26. He married Mary Newnham on 17th September 1728 in Ardingly, Sussex ('John from West Hoathly'). Mary was born on 23rd November and was baptised on 26th November 1703 in Ardingly the daughter of John & Elizabeth Newnham. John was buried on 17th November 1765 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('aged 75') and Mary was buried there on 27th June 1784 (a widow aged 81'). John & Mary had five children.
    1. John Brown was baptised on 29th August 1729 in West Hoathly, Sussex and he was buried there on 29th September 1731 ('infant son of John').
    2. William Brown was baptised on 30th August 1732 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
    3. John Brown was baptised on 21st August 1735 in West Hoathly, Sussex. John married Elizabeth Knight on 11th April 1757 in Bletchingly, Surrey. (Surrey Licenses 1673-1770 show - 7th April 1757 - John Browne of West Hoadly, Sussex, abode 6 weeks, collar maker, bachelor, 21, and Elizabeth Knight of Blechingly, abode 6 weeks, spinster, 20 ; at Blechingly. Edward Knight of Blechingly, farmer, her father,consenting. Both sign bond). John was buried on 3rd July 1808 in Bletchingly, Surrey ('aged 72') and Elizabeth was buried there on 2nd March 1823 ('aged 82'). John & Elizabeth had six children.
      1. Anne Brown (Ann) was baptised in May 1758 in Bletchingly, Surrey and she was buried there on 24th August 1761 ('Ann, daughter of John & Elizabeth').
      2. John Brown was baptised in May 1763 in Bletchingly, Surrey and he was possibly buried there on 22nd July 1786 (but burial may have been son of John & Martha).
      3. Abel Brown was baptised in May 1769 in Bletchingly, Surrey and he was buried there on 25th February 1793.
      4. Sarah Brown was baptised in December 1773 in Bletchingly, Surrey and she was possibly buried there on 8th July 1794.
      5. Jane Brown was baptised in February 1776 in Bletchingly, Surrey.
      6. Joseph Brown was baptised in September 1778 in Bletchingly, Surrey and he was buried there on 24th September 1778 ('son of John & Elizabeth').
    4. Joseph Brown was baptised on 9th September 1737 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He married Sarah Pilbeam (Philbeme) on 6th April 1761 in Lindfield, Sussex (Joseph shown as from West Hoathly, and banns issued at West Hoathly on 1st March). Joseph left a 'Will' proved in 1793 and was buried on 10th December 1792 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('aged 55 from Turners Hill') and Sarah was buried there on 12th August 1796 ('aged 56 from Turners Hill'). Joseph & Sarah had possibly two children.
      1. John Brown was baptised on 28th October 1764 in Worth, Sussex. John possibly married Jane. John & Jane had five children.
        1. Elizabeth Brown was baptised on 24th March 1793 in Worth, Sussex.
        2. Lucy Brown was baptised on 21st September 1794 in Worth, Sussex.
        3. Sarah Brown was baptised on 8th May 1795 in Worth, Sussex.
        4. Joseph Brown was baptised on 1st July 1798 in Worth, Sussex. He possibly married Susanna. Susanna was born in about 1810. Joseph & Susanna had possibly six children. They lived in 1841 in Brick Liln House, Godstone. (see census)
          1. Elizabeth Brown was baptised on 15th March 1829 in Godstone, Surrey.
          2. William Brown was baptised on 6th February 1831 in Godstone, Surrey. He married Sarah.
          3. Mary Ann Brown was baptised on 8th September 1833 in Godstone, Surrey.
          4. George Brown was born in 1836, probably in Godstone, Surrey. In 1861 he was living with his brother William in Godstone (see census). George possibly married Eleanor Watson in about February 1866 in Croydon, Surrey (Croydon RD). They possibly had a child Eleanor born in about May 1866 (Godstone RD). George possibly died in about November 1866 aged 30 (Godstone RD).
          5. Richard Brown was baptised on 12th August 1838 in Godstone, Surrey. In 1861 he was living with his brother William in Godstone (see census).
          6. John Brown was born in about February 1841 probably in Godstone, Surrey (Godstone RD).
        5. William Brown was baptised on 16th March 1800 in Worth, Sussex.
        6. John Brown was born on 12th May and was baptised on 11th July 1802 in Worth, Sussex.
        7. Robert Brown was born on 1st March and was baptised on 22nd April 1804 in Worth, Sussex.
        8. Mary Brown was born on 30th August and was baptised on 5th October 1806 in Worth, Sussex.
        9. George Brown was born on 20th October and was baptised on 8th November 1810 in Worth, Sussex.
      2. Mary Brown was baptised on 7th February 1768 in Worth, Sussex. (parent only shown as Joseph)
    5. Mary Brown was baptised on 20th July 1743 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
  3. Thomas Browne was baptised on 2nd August 1692 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's Will of 1708 as being under 24. He married (spouse unknown, but possibly Elizabeth) and had four children. Thomas was buried on 24th March 1767 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('aged 74').
    1. Joseph Brown was baptised on 11th March 1719 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.
    2. Thomas Brown was baptised on 27th July 1722 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. He married firstly Mary and they had one child (i). Mary was possibly buried on 15th January 1762 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. Thomas possibly married secondly Elizabeth Langridge on 29th May 1764 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. Elizabeth had been baptised on 22nd November 1741 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex, the daughter of Samuel & Anne Langridge. Thomas & Elizabeth had six children (ii-vii).
      1. Elizabeth Brown was baptised on 22nd February 1756 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.
      2. Anne Brown was baptised on 25th August 1765 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.
      3. Elizabeth Brown was baptised on 29th January 1769 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.
      4. Sarah Brown was baptised on 12th February 1771 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. She was buried there on 30th October 1776 (' daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth').
      5. Mary Brown was baptised on 23rd May 1773 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex.
      6. Thomas Brown was baptised on 1st March 1778 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. He was possibly buried on 6th June 1843 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('aged 68' ?).
      7. Henry Brown was baptised on 20th February 1780 in Horsted Keynes, Sussex. He possibly married Elizabeth Loader on 21st February 1803 in East Grinstead, Sussex. Henry & Elizabeth had six children.
        1. Louisa Brown was baptised on 24th June 1804 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
        2. Henry Brown was baptised on 7th September 1806 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
        3. Sarah Brown was baptised on 17th April 1808 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
        4. Elizabeth Brown was baptised on 23rd July 1809 in East Grinstead, Sussex.

  4. Jane Browne was baptised on 27th September 1694 in West Hoathly, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's Will of 1708 as being under 24. She probably married Henry Browne on 4th June 1730 in West Hoathly, Sussex. (see Philip Brown 1610)
  5. Mary Browne was baptised on 2nd March 1697 in West Hoathly, Sussex.
  6. William Browne was baptised on 16th January 1699 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's Will of 1708 as being under 24. He married Mary White on 31st May 1724 in East Grinstead, Sussex. They were subect to a Poor Law removal order (see Documents -Archives 1). William & Mary had six children
    1. Edward Brown was baptised on 6th July 1725 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He married Mary. They were subect to a Poor Law removal order (see Documents -Archives 2 & 3).Edward was possibly buried on 24th June 1763 in Lingfield, Surrey. Edward & Mary had two children.
      1. Mary Brown was baptised on 2nd February 1753 in Horne, Surrey.
      2. Drew Brown was baptised on 17th February 1755 in Horne, Surrey.
    2. Mary Brown was baptised on 12th February 1728 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
    3. Elizabeth Brown was baptised on 1st August 1731 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
    4. Sarah Brown was baptised on 11th May 1733 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
    5. Elisha Brown was baptised on 16th April 1735 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
    6. Anne Brown was baptised on 15th January 1738 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
  7. Anne Browne (Ann) was buried on 4th October 1698 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('Ann, daughter of Joseph & Jane').
  8. Nathaniel Browne was baptised on 14th February 1702 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's Will of 1708 as being under 24. He married firstly Mary Hunt on 18th July 1736 in West Hoathly, Sussex and they had one child (A). He possibly secondly married Lydia and they had one child (B). Nathanial was buried on 23rd January 1786 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('aged 83').

    2. Nathaniel Brown (Nathanial) was baptised on 2nd February 1743 in Lindfield, Sussex
  9. Abel Browne was possibly baptised on 23rd January 1705 in West Hoathly, Sussex (Source 1, but is not shown in register). He was mentioned in his father's Will of 1708 as being under 24.

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. Athough the details of the individual entries are correct, and the children are born to the named parents, a rigorous analysis has not yet been undertaken to ensure that the correct family heads are with the appropriate children.(ie if there was a choice of father's called 'William' the wrong one may have been used). Therefore this structure should only be viewed as indicative.In particular the children to Thomas (child 3) born in Horsted Keynes are not substantiated.
  2. In general the family name BROWNE was used up to about 1700 and then BROWN became standard
  3. SxG- Source 1 has a number of errors identified
    1. All dates shown between 01/01 and 24/03 up to year 1750 usually have the year shown as that of the previous year (Exceptions are: a) baptism of William shown as 16/1/1699, b ) baptism of Nathanial shown as 14/2/1702)
    2. There are some occasional slight date errors- a) baptism of John shown as 10/8/1735 and not 21/08/1735.

  1. Joseph Browne (Family ref top) left a 'Will' that was dated 10th Decemeber 1708 and was proved 14th January 1726 (Lewes A52.P120). It mentions his daughter Jane and sons William, Nathaniel & Abel.
  2. Joseph Browne (Family ref 1) left a 'Will' that was proven on 21st April 1738 (ref PCC Prob 11/688/377).
  3. Joseph Browne (Family ref 2 D) left a 'Will' that was proved 1793 (Lewes A66.P631). It mentions his wife Sarah, daughter Mary and son John.
