Jacob Brown (1712) & Anne Payne

Border
General History

Jacob Brown  & Anne Payne were one of my 7th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

Jacob Brown was baptised on 23rd November 1712 in Fletching, Sussex (note: SxF show date as September). He was the illegitimate child of Mary Brown of Fletching with no named father.
He married twice. He married firstly Anne Payne (Ann) on 19th November 1738 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He married secondly in later life Mary Shone on 28th July 1771 in East Grinstead (in the register they are shown as widower & widow). Jacob was buried on 19th May 1782 in East Grinstead, Sussex.

Anne Payne was born 22nd July 1714 in West Hoathly, Sussex. She was the daughter of Robert payne & margaret. She was buried on 11th January 1770 in East Grinstead ('Ann, wife of Jacob').
Mary Shone birth details are not known. She was possibly buried on 18th April 1784 in East Grinstead, Sussex (' a widow').

Jacob Brown & Anne Payne had six known children:

William James Mary John Jacob Ann
  1. William Brown was baptised on 6th May 1741 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He possibly married Sarah Cacket on 3rd May 1764 in Edenbridge, Kent. 1. Mary Brown was baptised on 14th October 1764 in East Grinstead, Sussex
  2. James Brown was baptised on 14th December 1743 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He probably married Ann Horsey on 8th June 1771 in Godstone, Surrey (James is shown as from East Grinstead). Ann was buried on 30th October 1806 ('widow of James'). James and Ann had six children.
    1. Phillis Brown was baptised on 15th September 1771 in East Grinstead, Sussex and she was buried there on 1st August 1775 ('daughter of James & Ann').

Isaac was buried on 28th August 1803 in East Grinstead, Sussex . Isaac & Martha had three children (ii-iv). (Note:there may be errors here as an Isaac married Elizabeth Carter on 31/12/1804 in Ardingly)
      1. Isaac Brown was baptised on 18th August 1793 in Horne, Surrey. He was baseborn of Martha Peters of Burstow and was also shown on the Burstow parish register. Isaac was probably buried on 9th September 1870 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('aged 67' ??). He may not have been the son of Isaac
      2. Mary Ann Brown was baptised on 14th April 1799 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
      3. Wiliam Brown was baptised on 9th August 1801 in East Grinstead, Sussex.

Mary possibly witnessed the births of Thomas Faulconer in 1775 & Ann Faulconer in 1777 (see certificate). Mary was probably buried on 10th January 1805 in East Grinstead, Sussex ('widow of John'). Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. This is the only Jacob Brown identified as being born prior to 1722 (sources 1-6). This person is very likely to be correct.
  2. There were no Ann Payne's in East Grinstead  for the valid age range(1707-1722:  Age 16 at marriage to age 50 at last child birth). For this date range the Ann Payne shown is the only one identified (sources 1, 2, 6 + Fletching). There was a Hannah Payne born 28/2/1716 in Fletching but it is believed she married Paul Taylor on 27/05/1735 in Fletching.  There was an Ann Payne baptised in Fletching on 11/4/1722 but she would be only 16 at marriage date - possible but unlikely.
The Ann identified is very likely to be correct.
  3. The marriage of James Brown (child 2) to Ann may not be correct as there was another James Brown in East Grinstead at this time. He was the son of John & Elizabeth baptised on 6/1/1748 in East Grinstead. (see Philip Brown 1610) The names of the children do however make this the more likely family group. The last child James was the last Brown child born in East Grinstead until 1799.
  4. Mary Brown (child 3) may have married John Brown or possible John Brown (child 4) married a Mary Brown. The former is more likely because of the age. There were also a number of other Mary Brown's around so this marriage may well not be correct. The John Brown may have been
    1. son of John & Elizabeth baptised 25/4/1735 in East Grinstead (see Philip Brown 1610)
    2. son of John & Ann baptised 7/10/1732 in East Grinstead
    3. or possibly even the son of John & Mary baptised 21/08/1735 in West Hoathly, but he married Elizabeth Knight in Bletchingly in 1757.
  5. There is also a marriage of Mary Brown to John Elliot on 1/10/1767 in Worth, witnessed by Jacob Brown which may be a more likely marriage.
