Abel Browne & Elizabeth were not one of my direct ancestors but they are related to me as later indirect generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

Abel Browne was born about 1622 (this is presumed as no birth records have been found) possibly in Worth, Sussex.. He was possibly the son of Abel Browne who was the son of Thomas Browne (& Elizabeth) who was the son of Abel Brown (& Mary Mascal) who was the son of Thomas Browne & Elizabeth Teyton. He married Elizabeth and they had four children. Elizabeth possibly remarried John Pollard on 11th February 1674 in Horne, Surrey (Elizabeth shown as previously married from Burstow). Abel was possibly buried on 16th January 1661 in Bletchingly, Surrey. His estate, in Burstow, had a probate inventory undertaken on 17th February 1661 (see below) with Abel shown as 'late of Burstow'.

Elizabeth's birth details are not known.

  1. Abel Browne was baptised on 29th May 1651 in Nutfield, Surrey. He married Elizabeth Browning on 1st October 1685 in Ardingly, Sussex. Abel left a Will dated 14th January 1727 and was shown to be living in Withyham, Sussex but lands in Burstow are also mentioned. Abel was probably buried on 21st February 1728 in East Grinstead, Sussex (shown as Able and 'old man'). Elizabeth was mentioned in her husband's 'Will' of 1727 and she was buried on 24th April 1730 in East Grinstead, Sussex ('a widow'). Abel & Elizabeth had six children.
    1. Abel Brown (Able) was baptised on 25th March 1688 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's Will of 1727. He married Susanna Head on 9th April 1725 in East Grinstead, Sussex (shown as Able). Abel was buried on 17th May 1730 in East Grinstead, Sussex (shown as Able & Yeoman). Abel & Susanna had three children.
      1. Elizabeth Brown was baptised on 20th May 1726 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
      2. Sarah Brown was baptised on 10th April 1730 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
      3. Mary Brown was baptised on 10th April 1730 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
    2. Sarah Brown was baptised on 26th September 1690 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's Will of 1727.
    3. Elizabeth Brown was baptised on 4th December 1693 in East Grinstead, Sussex. No name given but shown as daughter of Abel & Elizabeth of Lingfield. She was mentioned in her father's Will of 1727.
    4. Anne Brown was baptised on 15th February 1696 in Lingfield, Surrey (father shown as Abeli). She was mentioned in her father's Will of 1727.
    5. William Brown was probably born around 1700, probably in Lingfield, Surrey. He was mentioned in his father's Will of 1727. He possibly married Jane. William & Jane had five children.
      1. William Brown was born in about 1730, possibly in Lingfield, Surrey (source 14).
      2. Elizabeth Brown was baptised on 19th August 1731 in Lingfield, Surrey.
      3. Mary Brown was born in about 1733, possibly in Lingfield, Surrey (source 14).
      4. John Brown was baptised on 23rd May 1735 in Lingfield, Surrey and he was buried there on 14th July 1742 ('son of William').
      5. Jane Brown was baptised on 13th March 1737 in Lingfield, Surrey.
      6. Christopher Brown was baptised on 26th August 1739 in Lingfield, Surrey.
      7. Margaret Brown was baptised on 25th November 1741 in Lingfield, Surrey and was buried there on 13th June 1742 ('an infant').
      8. Anne Brown (Ann) was baptised on 4th October 1743 in Edenbridge, Kent and she was buried there in 1744 ('daughter of William').
      9. John Blair Brown was baptised on 10th August 1746 in Edenbridge, Kent.
    6. John Brown (Johannes) was baptised on 10th October 1702 in Lingfield, Surrey and was buried there on 13th February 1705 ('son of Abel').
  2. Mercy Brown was baptised on 8th March 1655 in Burstow, Surrey.
  3. John Brown was baptised on 11th January 1657 in Horne, Surrey (son of Abel & Elizabeth from Burstow). He possibly married Mary Finis on 18th May 1682 in Burstow, Surrey. John was possibly buried on 29th November 1741 in Godstone, Surrey (aged 92!!) and Mary was possibly buried there on 20th May 1742. John & Mary had eight children.
    1. Elizabeth Browne was baptised on 15th February 1683 in Godstone, Surrey.
    2. Anne Browne was baptised on 20th March 1684 in Godstone, Surrey.
    3. John Browne was baptised on 4th November 1685 in Godstone, Surrey.
    4. Mary Browne was baptised on 10th February 1687 in Godstone, Surrey.
    5. Sarah Browne was baptised on 27th December 1688 in Godstone, Surrey.
    6. Jane Browne was baptised on 5th October 1690 in Godstone, Surrey.
    7. William Browne was baptised on 28th August 1692 in Godstone, Surrey. He possibly married Mary. Mary was possibly buried on 9th July 1763 in Godstone, Surrey and William was possibly buried there on 27th June 1766. William & Mary had three children.
      1. Mary Browne was baptised on 23rd June 1714 in Godstone, Surrey.
      2. Martha Browne was baptised on 28th October 1716 in Godstone, Surrey.
      3. Elizabeth Browne was baptised on 11th September 1719 in Godstone, Surrey.
    8. Richard Browne was baptised on 28th December 1698 in Godstone, Surrey. He possibly married Elizabeth. Richard & Elizabeth had three children.
      1. Elizabeth Browne was baptised on 1st September 1728 in Tandridge, Surrey and she was buried there on 22nd November 1728.
      2. Mary Browne was baptised on 6th March 1730 in Tandridge, Surrey.
      3. William Browne was born on 24th January and was baptised on 28th January 1732 in Tandridge, Surrey. William was buried on 12th October 1813 in Tandridge, Surrey ('aged 82'). William left a 'Will' that was proven on 6th May 1814.
  4. William Brown was baptised on 28th April 1659 in Burstow, Surrey. He possibly married Mary Duglass on 9th May 1682 in Lingfield, Surrey. Mary was buried on 30th September 1706 in Lingfield, Surrey ('wife of William'). William & Mary had six children. (Note: Wife & Children could possibly also have been children of William son of Theophelus born 1645 in East Grinstead and/or vice versa - see John Brown 1558)
    1. Mary Browne was baptised on 5th August 1683 in Lingfield, Surrey.
    2. Thomas Browne was baptised on 22nd July 1684 in Lingfield, Surrey (no parents shown).
    3. William Browne was baptised on 26th August 1685 in Lingfield, Surrey and he was buried there 23rd April 1686 ('son of William').
    4. William Browne was baptised on 2nd January 1687 in Lingfield, Surrey.
    5. Elizabeth Browne was baptised on 9th February 1690 in Lingfield, Surrey.

Wills
  1. Abel Browne (Family ref top) had a Probate Inventory undertaken on 17th February 1661 (Ref PRO prob.4.11480) . The link is to an old transcript of this inventory.
  2. Abel Browne (Family ref 1) left a Will that was dated 1727 and was proved in 1728. (Lewes A52.P508). It shows Abel as living in Withyham and mentions his wife Elizabeth, his daughters Sarah, Elizabeth & Anna and sons Abel & William. Also mentions lands in Burstow occupied by William Taylor and lands in Lingfield occupied by John Path.
  3. William Brown (Family ref 3 H iii) left a 'Will' that was proven on 6th May 1814 (ref PCC Prob 11/1556/35).
