John Wicking & Mary Care were not one of my direct ancestors but they are related to me as later indirect generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

John Wicking (shown as Wicken) was born on 19th September 1660 in East Grinstead, Sussex and was baptised there on 25th September 1660 the son of John Wicking (& Mary Lee (Faulkner)), the son of Thomas Wicking & Elizabeth Sampson, the son of John Wicking & Elizabeth Wheler. He was mentioned in his father’s ‘Will’ of 1686. He probably married Mary Care on 8th February 1687 of Hartfield . (License issued 7th February 1687 at Lewes with sureties provided by William Read (In holder of Lewes) and Nicholas Asdown (drawer of Lewes), but name is shown as Mary Carr and John shown as from East Grinstead). John was possibly buried on 13th March 1710 in East Grinstead, Sussex, ('Late of Pickstones').

Mary Care was possibly baptised on 23rd February 1668 in Hartfield, Sussex the daughter of Simon Care & Catherine. (Simon & Catherine (or Symon & Catharin) had four other children: Anne (1669), Sarah (1670), Hannah (1672) & Elizabeth (1675)). Simon was probably the son of William baptised on 25th May 1628 in Hartfield, Sussex.

John & Mary had four children.
  1. John Wicking was baptised on 16th October 1688 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He married Catherine Pilbeam (Katherine Pillbem) on 26th April 1716 in Ardingly, Sussex and John was described as a 'Blacksmith'. John left a 'Will' dated 23rd August 1753 and was buried on 20th October 1758 in Ardingly, Sussex ('aged 70'). Catherine was mentioned in her husband's 'Will' of 1753 and she was buried on 10th November 1764 in Ardingly, Sussex ('aged 78'). John & Catherine had four children.
    1. Elizabeth Wicking (Wicken) was baptised on 20th August 1717 in Ardingly, Sussex. She married William Allen (of Lindfield) on 6th October 1748 in Ardingly, Sussex. Elizabeth & William had one child in Lindfield (William) in 1749. He was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1753 as grandson (Elizabeth had presumably died prior to 1753).
    2. John Wicking (Wickens) was baptised on 23rd January 1719 in Ardingly, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1753. He probably married Mary Chatfield, (a widow), on 23rd February 1748 in Ardingly, Sussex. Mary was buried on 30th November 1749 in Ardingly, Sussex ('aged 23') and John was buried there on 21st August 1762 ('aged 43'). John and Mary had one known child.
      1. John Wicking (Wickings) was born 17th November and was baptised on 30th November 1748 in Ardingly, Sussex. He probably married Anne Nicolas (Ann) on 28th June 1768 in Ardingly, Sussex. John was buried on 26th September 1780 in Ardingly, Sussex ('aged 32'). John & Ann had four children.
        1. John Wicking was born & baptised on 26th April 1769 in Ardingly, Sussex.
        2. Anne Wicking (Ann) was born on 18th March and was baptised on 17th April 1771 in Ardingly, Sussex.
        3. William Wicking was born on 13th February and was baptised on 12th March 1773 in Ardingly, Sussex.
        4. Mary Wicking was born on 14th October and was baptised on 4th November 1774 in Ardingly, Sussex.
    3. Mary Wicking (Wickens) was baptised on 16th July 1721 in Ardingly, Sussex (mother shown as Katherine). She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1753 as Mary wife of Thomas Stanbridge. Mary married Thomas Stanbridge on 15th December 1749 in Ardingly, Sussex.
    4. Catherine Wicking (Wickens) was baptised on 15th September 1723 in Ardingly, Sussex (mother & daughter shown as Cathorine). She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1753. She had a child. She possibly later married William Putland on 12th April 1763 in Ardingly, Sussex.
      1. Abraham Wicking was born & baptised on 13th August 1758 in Ardingly, Sussex.
  2. Mary Wicking was baptised on 26th August 1690 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
  3. Thomas Wicking was baptised on 3rd January 1693 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
  4. William Wicking was born on 7th May 1695 and was baptised on 24th May 1695 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He probably married Sarah Stoner on 28th May 1724 in Hartfield, Sussex (Sarah was from Ardingly & records taken from Ardingly). William was buried on 11th August 1741 in Ardingly, Sussex ('aged 44'). William and Sarah had one known child.
    1. Abraham Wicking (Wickings) was baptised on 17th October 1725 in Ardingly, Sussex and he was buried there on 19th March 1745 (aged 19').

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. There are a variety of names used instead of Wicking. These are all felt to be spelling variations. The names identified are: , Wicken, Wickinge, Wickens,Wickyng, Wekyhge, Weekyng, Weckynge, Weeknge, Weekinge, Weekyn, Weking, Wyking, Wycking, Wykinge. There are Wickenden's in East Grinstead & Cowden, but these have been excluded as considered another name.
  2. There were four John Wicking’s born in the period 1635-1671 ( age 16 at marriage to 60 at eldest child) John had a will that refers to Pickstones so it assumed the whole family relates to Peckstones..
    1. 25/9/1660 East Grinstead son of John & Mary
    2. 9/4/1645 East Grinstead son of John & Anne
    3. 31/5/1642 East Grinstead son of John & Elizabeth of Tandridge Surrey, but recorded as buried on 21st February 1660.
    4. 4/8/1641 East Grinstead son of John & Anne but assumed died

Wills:

  1. John Wicking (Family ref 1) left a 'Will' dated 23rd August 1753 which was proved in 1759 (ref Lewes A60.P111). In the 'Will' (which is very long - 7 pages), he mentions his wife Catherine; his son John ; his daughters Mary wife of Thomas Stanbridge !!, Catherine Wicking; his grandson William Allen!! (under 21).
