John Wicking & Elizabeth Wheeler were one of my 12th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

John Wicking was baptised on 16th July 1581 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was the son of John Wicking who was the son of Thomas Wicking. He was mentioned in his uncle William Wicking's 'will' of 1620. John (shown as Wickeng) married firstly Ann (Agnes) Bannister on 20th June 1603 in East Grinstead, Sussex. It is thought that John secondly married Elizabeth Wheeler (Wheler) of West Hoathly. The license was issued at Lewes on 13th February 1613. It is thought that John possibly married thirdly Anne Cox, a widow of Framfield, Sussex . License issued at Lewes on 9th June 1624. John left a 'Will' which was dated 27th August 1638 and proved on 10th September 1638 and he was probably buried on 31st August 1638 in East Grinstead, Sussex (shown as Wicken). Anne was mentioned in her husband's will of 1638 (as my now wife).

Elizabeth Wheeler's birth details are unknown.

  1. Thomas Wicking ((shown as Weekyng) was baptised on 9th October 1603 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's will of 1638 as eldest son & heir. He inherited Pickstones. Thomas probably married Elizabeth Sampson on 12th January 1630 in Hartfield, Sussex. He left a 'Will' dated 10th July 1650 which was proved in on 10nd September 1655. Elizabeth was mentioned in the 'Will' as joint executor. Thomas & Elizabeth had two children.
    1. John Wicking was born in about 1635 probably in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1650 as under 21 and inherited Pickstones. John (shown as Wicken) married firstly Mary (Lee) Faulconer on 14th March 1658 in East Grinstead, Sussex. (Bands issued on that date & John described as a Yeoman). Mary Faulconer was born on 4th May 1634 in East Grinstead, Sussex, the daughter of Henry Faulconer & Mary. She firstly married John Lee. She was described as a widow when she married secondly John Wicking (shown as Wicken) but lived in East Grinstead at the time of the marriage. She was buried on 2nd February 1670 in East Grinstead, Sussex ( ‘Mary Wicken wife of John’). John Wicking married secondly Anne Clarke, a widow from Frant, Sussex. License issued on 16th May 1671 at Lewes. John was described as Yeoman and Widower of East Grinstead. Sureties provided by John Wicking and Simon Pricovance (inholder of Lewes). John left a 'Will' dated 20th August 1686 and was buried on 6th September 1686 in East Grinstead, Sussex (Wicken of Peckstones). Anne left a 'Will' dated 9th January 1694 and she died shortly afterwards possibly in Withyham, Sussex. In Anne's 'Will' she mentions her late husband John Wicking of Pickstones and his three children. John & Mary had four children.
      1. Unnamed Wicking  was not baptised but was buried 13th July 1659 in East Grinstead, Sussex (a child of John Wickens).
      2. John Wicking (shown as Wicken) was born on 19th September 1660 in East Grinstead, Sussex and was baptised there on 25th September 1660. He is mentioned in his father’s ‘Will’ of 1686. He married Mary Care. Details of John Wicking & Mary Care are shown separately.
      3. Mary Wicking (shown as Wicken) was baptised on 13th July 1663 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father’s ‘Will’of 1686. She married Thomas Mathew (of East Grinstead) in maybe Hartfield or Withyham). License issued at Lewes on 15th January 1686 with surety provided by John Wicking and John Stone of Maresfield. Mary is mentioned in her father’s ‘Will’ of 1686 as is Thomas Mathew. Thomas & Mary had seven known children.
        1. John Mathew was baptised on 12th September 1687 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
        2. Elizabeth Mathew was baptised on 3rd August 1689 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
        3. Thomas Mathew was baptised on 26th August 1691 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
        4. Mary Mathew was baptised on 24th January 1694 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
        5. Benjamin Mathew was baptised on 3rd December 1695 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
        6. Sarah Mathew was baptised on 22nd December 1697 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
        7. Anne Mathew was baptised on 12th May 1702 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
        8. Robert Mathew was baptised on 13th September 1704 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
      4. Elizabeth Wicking (shown as Wicken) was baptised on 26th February 1666 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father’s ‘Will’ of 1686. Elizabeth possibly married William Chapman, son of William & Margaret Chapman, on 1st July 1700 in St Swithin, East Grinstead, Sussex. (William Chapman was baptised on 20th September 1667 in St Nicholas, Worth, Sussex and was buried on 28th October 1743 in St Nicholas, Worth, Sussex- aged 77).
    2. Anne Wicking was born in about 1640 probably in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1650 as under 21.
  2. John Wicking was baptised on 27th October 1605 in East Grinstead, Sussex. (Shown as son of John Weekynge of Peckstones). He presumably died prior to 1638 as he was not mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1638.
  3. William Wicking was baptised on 1st November 1607 in East Grinstead, Sussex. (Shown as Wryllyam, son of John Wekynge of Peckstones.) He was mentioned in his father's will of 1638
  4. Matthew Wicking (shown as Mathias Wickins) was baptised on 3rd April 1614 in East Grinstead, Sussex. Mathew married Susan Brooker. He was mentioned in his father's will of 1638. Details of Matthew Wicking & Susan Brooker are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
  5. Henry Wicking (shown as Wickins) was baptised on 17th December 1615 in East Grinstead, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father's will of 1638. He was buried on 7th January 1639 in East Grinstead, Sussex (shown as Wickinge).
  6. Elizabeth Wicking (shown as Wicken) was baptised on 6th April 1617 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's will of 1638.
  7. Joan Wicking (shown as Jone Wickens) was baptised on 31st October 1619 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's will of 1638 as Jane.

  1. There are a variety of names used instead of Wicking. These are all felt to be spelling variations. The names identified are: , Wicken, Wickinge, Wickens,Wickyng, Wekyhge, Weekyng, Weckynge, Weeknge, Weekinge, Weekyn, Weking, Wyking, Wycking, Wykinge. There are Wickenden's in East Grinstead & Cowden, but these have been excluded as considered another name.

  1. John Wicking (Family ref top) left a 'Will' dated 27th August 1638 which was proved on 10th September 1638 (ref PCC Prob 11/177/773). The link is to a Transcript of the 'Will'. The 'Will' mentions his wife Ann ; his sons: Thomas (eldest & heir), William, Matthew, Henry (executors) ; his daughters: Elizabeth, Jane ; Overseer: John Sampson of Hartfield ; Witnesses: Robert King , John Sampson, John Head ; Properties mentioned: Pickstones
  2. Thomas Wicking (Family ref 1) left a 'Will' dated 10th July 1650 which was proved in on 10nd September 1655 (ref PCC Prob 11/213/650). The link is to a Transcript of the 'Will'. The 'Will' mentions his wife : Elizabeth (joint executor) ; his daughter: Anne (under 21); his son: John (under 21)- inherited Pickstones- joint executor. Properties mentioned: Pickstones

The 'Will' mentions his wife un-named ; his son John (executor); his daughters Mary , Elizabeth ; his son in law Thomas Matthew (husband of Mary) . Overseers were William Bannester of Fletching and John Hills of Horsted Keines . Witnesses were William Greene, Olliver Peirce, Mary Godwin, Anne Albourne. Properties mentioned were Perkstones, Leames.
  4. Anne Wicking (family ref 1 A) left a 'Will' dated 9th January 1694 which was proved in 1694 (ref Lewes A42.P9). In the 'Will' she mentions the three children of late husband, John Wicking of Pickstones; her kinsman John Berbour of Rotherfield (executor) - my sisters son.
