Thomas Underhill & Anne Clifton were not one of my direct ancestors but they are related to me as later indirect generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

Thomas Underhill was baptised on 17th November 1566 in Lingfield, Surrey. He was the son of Francis Underhill, the son of John Underhill 1490 & Agnes. He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1583. He possibly married Anne Clifton on 10th April 1599 in Lingfield, Surrey. Ann was buried 28th December 1627 in Lingfield Surrey ('wife of Thomas of Frith' - no name given).

Anne Clifton birth deatils are not known.

  2. Thomas Underhill was baptised on 12th December 1601 in Lingfield, Surrey (son of Thomas).
  3. Rachel Underhill (Rachell) was baptised on 13th March 1603 in Lingfield, Surrey ('dau of Thomas of Frith')
  4. Francis Underhill was baptised on 29th March 1604 in Lingfield, Surrey ('son of Thomas of Frith') . He probably married Jane Haselgrove on 8th December 1634 in Crawley, Sussex, (license issued at Lewes on 6th February and Francis shown from Horne, Surrey and Jane from Ifield with sureties by Robert Hunt of Ifield). Francis & Jane had two children.
    1. Anna Underhill was baptised on 29th November 1635 in Lingfield, Surrey and she was buried there on 29th December 1635 ('unnamed- child of Francis')
    2. George Underhill was baptised on 31st December 1637 in Lingfield, Surrey and he was buried there 22nd January 1639 ('son of Francis').
    3. John Underhill was maybe possibly born in about 1640 in Lingfield, Surrey (derived as no birth records found- may not be a son of Francis). John was possibly buried on 19th September 1704 in Lingfield, Surrey ('John of Frith).
      1. Elizabeth Underhill was baptised on 8th March 1665 in Lingfield, Surrey (dau of John). She married Edward Knight on 7th February 1688 in Lingfield, Surrey (Surrey Licenses 1673-1770 issued on 18th February showing "Edward Knight of Lingfeild, widdower, 40, and Elizabeth Underhill of Lingfeild, spinster, 23 ; at Lingfeild or ... . With y' consent of John Underhill, her father")
      2. Anne Underhill (Anna) was baptised on 4th November 1667 in Lingfield, Surrey (daughter of John of Frith).
      3. William Underhill was baptised on 28th December 1669 in Lingfield, Surrey (son of John).
      4. John Underhill was baptised on 11th April 1670 in Lingfield, Surrey (son of John).
      5. Sarah Underhill was baptised on 11th June 1675 in Lingfield, Surrey (daughter of John of Frith).
      6. Susanna Underhill was baptised on 17th October 1677 in Lingfield, Surrey (daughter of John of Frith. She was possibly buried there on 18th July 1699 (Susanna daughter of John of Frith).
      7. Edward Underhill was buried on 27th June 1699 in Lingfield, Surrey (son of John of Frith).
      8. John Underhill was buried on 28th December 1703 in Lingfield, Surrey (son of John of Frith).
  5. John Underhill was maybe possibly born in about 1605 in Lingfield, Surrey (derived as no birth records found- may not be a son of Thomas). He became 'John of Puttenden'. Details of John Underhill of Puttenden are shown separately.
