Nicholas Underhill & Joan Allen were not one of my direct ancestors but they are related to me as later indirect generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

Nicholas Underhill was born around 1550 probably in Lingfield. He married Joan Allen (Johane Allyn) on 31st May 1578 in East Grinstead, Sussex (she was mentioned in his 'Will' of 1611). Nicholas left a 'Will' dated 4th December 1611 and he was buried on 23rd December 1611 in Lingfield, Surrey ('Nicholas Senior').

Joan Allen's birth details are not known

  1. John Underhill was baptised on 1st October 1581 in Lingfield, Surrey. He was also shown in East Grinstead register (shown as Nicholas Underhill, his son). He was mentioned in his fathers 'Will' of 1611. He married Anne (who was mentioned in her husband's 'Will' of 1616). John left a 'Will' dated 26th February 1616 and he died in 1616. John & Anne had four children.
    1. Joan Underhill was baptised on 28th April 1605 in Lingfield, Surrey. She was mentioned in her grandfather Nicholas Underhill's 'Will' of 1611 as being under 14 and in her father's 'Will' of 1616 (as eldest daughter).
    2. Anne Underhill (Anna) was baptised on 30th July 1609 in Burstow, Surrey. She was mentioned in her grandfather Nicholas Underhill's 'Will' of 1611 as being under 14 and in her father's 'Will' of 1616. She probably married John Dungate. Details of John Dungate & Anne Underhill are shown separately - (see Thomas Dungate 1574 family ref 1).
    3. Mary Underhill was baptised on 28th April 1612 in Worth, Sussex (dau of John & Anne). She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1616 and in her sister Ann Dungate's 'Will' of 1680 as Mary Milles. She probably married John Mills (Milles). Details of John Mills & Mary Underhill are shown separately -( see Thomas Mills 1540 family ref 3 A).
    4. Elizabeth Underhill was baptised on 4th September 1614 in Worth, Sussex (dau of John & Anne). She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1616 (as youngest daughter) and in her sister Ann Dungate's 'Will' of 1680 as Elizabeth Clement/Best. She probably married Robert Clement on 14th February 1633 in Worth, Sussex and had at least six children (Robert, Richard, Thomas, John, Eleanor & Edward).
  2. Joan Underhill (or Jane on PRT) was baptised on 19th May 1583 in Lingfield, Surrey and she was buried there on 19th May 1583 (Joane, daughter of Nicholas).
  3. Elizabeth Underhill was buried on 22nd February 1584 in Lingfield, Surrey (daughter of Nicholas).
  4. Nicholas Underhill was baptised on 7th November 1585 in Lingfield, Surrey. He was mentioned in his fathers Will of 1611 and was Executor. He was mentioned in his brother John Underhill's 'Will' of 1616 (as brother). He was probably mentioned in Thomas Underhill's 'Will' of 1624 as 'Kinsman' & overseer & witness. He was probably mentioned in Edward Underhill's 'Will' of 1634 as 'Kinsman' & overseer. He married firstly Jane Brailfall in 1604 in Lingfield, Surrey. They had one child (a). He secondly married Susan Webb on 8th February 1618 in Lingfield, Surrey and they had five children (b-f)
    1. Ano Underhill (daughter) was baptised on 11th July 1616 in Lingfield, Surrey (daughter of Nicholas)
    2. Joan Underhill (Joane) was baptised on 16th August 1621 in Lingfield, Surrey
    3. Anne Underhill was baptised on 18th January 1624 in Lingfield, Surrey (and also recorded in East Grinstead - shown as Nicholas & Susan from Lingfield)
    4. Nicholas Underhill was baptised on 24th January 1627 in Lingfield, Surrey. He maybe possibly married Mary. Nicholas left a 'Will' that was dated 18th October 1705 and he was buried on 20th November 1706 in Lingfield, Surrey (' Nicholas of Simpeers (or Simpose)). The 'Will' was witnessed by Arthur Underhill- See Thomas Underhill 1530).
    5. Susanna Underhill was baptised on 24th May 1629 in Lingfield, Surrey.
    6. Elizabeth Underhill was baptised on 27th January 1633 in Lingfield, Surrey.
  5. Joan Underhill (Joane) was baptised on 12th May 1588 in Lingfield, Surrey and she was buried there on 4th August 1588 (daughter of Nicholas).

Wills:

  1. Nicholas Underhill (Family ref ) left a 'Will' that was dated 4th December 1611 and was proved on 18th May 1612 (ref LMA-DW/PA/ 05/1612/163). The link is to an Abstract & a Copy of the Will. The 'Will' mentions his wife Joan; his sons John, Nicholas; his grandchildren Joan, Ann daughters of John. Others were Richard Geale (servant), Elizabeth Hart (servant), Overseers were Richard Plawe, William Squire. Witnesses were Edward Bantry, John Pickenye.
  2. John Underhill (Family ref ) left a 'Will' that was dated 26th February 1615 and was proved on 28th May 1616 (ref Lewes A15.P137). The link is to a Copy of the Will. The 'Will' mentions his wife Anne; his brother Nicholas ; his daughters Joanne (eldest), Ano (second), Mary, Elizabeth (youngest).
  3. Nicholas Underhill (Family ref ) left a 'Will' that was dated 18th October 1705 and was proved on 23rd January 1707 ( ref LMA-DW/PA/  05/1707/159). The 'Will' mentions his wife Mary; his son in law Edward Knight; his kinsmen John Underhill of Puttenden, Catherine Underhill (sister of John) Thomas Underhill (son of John!) & Others: lots-see will.
