John Underhill of Puttenden were not one of my direct ancestors but they are related to me as later indirect generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

John Underhill was maybe possibly born in about 1605 in Lingfield, Surrey (derived as no birth records found). He may (or may not) be a son of Thomas Underhill the son of Thomas Underhill 1566 of Frith. John possibly married Mary Underhill (Merrie) on 9th February 1631 in Lingfield, Surrey. John was possibly buried on 8th December 1674 in Lingfield, Surrey ('of Puttingden'). Mary was buried on 1st June 1685 in Lingfield, Surrey ('widow, of Puttenden').

  1. John Underhill was baptised 13th August 1635 in Lingfield, Surrey (son of John) . He possibly married Elizabeth in about 1662. John was possibly buried on 7th August 1682 in Lingfield, Surrey Elizabeth was mentioned in his brother Edward's 'Will' of 1693 in which she is shown as a 'sister' and widowed. Elizabeth was possibly buried on 27th March 1704 in Lingfield, Surrey ('widow').
    1. Elizabeth Underhill was baptised on 17th December 1663 in East Grinstead, Sussex (daughter of John & Elizabeth).
    2. Thomas Underhill was baptised on 7th July 1665 in East Grinstead, Sussex (son of John & Elizabeth). He was mentioned in his uncle Edward's 'Will' of 1693. He was mentioned in Nicholas Underhill 'Will' of 1705 as son of John Underhill. He possibly married secondly Elizabeth Herdly on 27th April 1701 in Lingfield, Surrey. Elizabeth was buried on 8th February 1708 in Lingfield, Surrey (' wife of Thomas senior'). Thomas was probably buried on 5th June 1708 in Lingfield, Surrey ('Thomas senior'). They had children
      1. Elizabeth Underhill was baptised on 19th January 1695 in Lingfield, Surrey
      2. Thomas Underhill was born in about 1698 , probably in Lingfield, Surrey (derived as no birth record found- father buried as Thomas senior implying a Thomas junior existed).
      3. Mercy Underhill was baptised on 26th February 1700 in Lingfield, Surrey
      4. Nicholas Underhill was baptised on 15th June 1702 in Lingfield, Surrey. Nicholas married Elizabeth and had eight children (Nicholas (1730), Elizabeth, Elizabeth, Edward, Susannah, Mary, Thomas)
      5. Susanna Underhill was baptised on 24th November 1706 in Lingfield, Surrey and was buried there on 17th March 1707 ('daughter of Thomas').
    3. John Underhill was baptised 30th July 1670 in East Grinstead, Sussex (son of John & Elizabeth). He was mentioned in his uncle Edward's 'Will' of 1693 as the main beneficiary and in which he had to maintain his mother Elizabeth for life (implying her husband had died). He was mentioned in Nicholas Underhill 'Will' of 1705 as kinsman John Underhill of Puttenden. He was mentioned in Arthur Underhill's 'Will' of 1712 as John Underhill of Puttenden and was a witness to the 'Will' and Overseer. He was mentioned in Uncle Arthur Underhill 'Will' of 1718. He married Susan (Susan also mentioned in Uncle Arthur Underhill 'Will' of 1718). Susan was possibly buried on 21st April 1735 in Lingfield, Surrey ('unnamed-wife of John')
      1. Elizabeth Underhill was baptised on 16th December 1702 in Lingfield, Surrey (dau of John of Puttenden). She was mentioned in great uncle Arthur Underhill 'Will' of 1718 as under 21
      2. Susanna Underhill was baptised on 25th February 1706 in Lingfield, Surrey (daughter of John) and she was buried there on 27th February 1706 (' daughter of John').
      3. Arthur Underhill was baptised on 4th May 1708 in Lingfield, Surrey (son of John). He was mentioned in great uncle Arthur Underhill 'Will' of 1718 .
      4. Nicholas Underhill was baptised on 8th December 1709 in Lingfield, Surrey (son of John). He was mentioned in great uncle Arthur Underhill 'Will' of 1718 as under 21. He married Mary Stacy on 18th February 1735 in Horne, Surrey. (Surrey Licenses 1673-1770 show Nicholas Underhill of Lingfield, bachelor, 25,and Mary Stacy of Lingfield, spinster, 22 ; at Horne. Daniel Saunders of Lingfield, 2nd s. Both sign.) Nicholas was buried on 3rd May 1736 in Lingfield, Surrey ('son of John'). Nicholas & Mary had one child Mary (1736-daughter of Mary widow of Nicholas deceased)
      5. John Underhill was buried on 30th January 1710 in Lingfield, Surrey (son of John)
    4. Catherine Underhill was born in about 1672 possibly in East Grinstead, Sussex.. She was mentioned in her Uncle Edward's 'Will' of 1693. She was mentioned in Nicholas Underhill 'Will' of 1705 as sister of John Underhill of Puttenden.
  2. Arthur Underhill was baptised on 1st October 1638 in Lingfield, Surrey. He was mentioned in his brother Edward's 'Will' of 1693. Arthur left a 'Will' dated 25th February 1718 and he was buried on 20th March 1719 in Lingfield, Surrey.
  3. Mary Underhill was baptised on 10th April 1641 in Lingfield, Surrey. She married Edward Stanford on 18th November 1667 in Lingfield, Surrey. Mary & Edward were mentioned in her brother Edward's 'Will' of 1693. Mary & Edward had five children John, Mary, Edward, Thomas, Susanna all of whom were mentioned in Uncle Edward's Will of 1693 (Thomas & Susanna both being under 21).
  4. Edward Underhill was possibly born around 1643. He left a 'Will' which was dated 9th September 1693 and he was buried on 1st February 1700 in Lingfield, Surrey ('Edward of Puttenden').
  5. Mercy Underhill was possibly born around 1645. She was mentioned in her brother Edward's 'Will' of 1693 as sister Mercy Bawcombe. She married a Mr Bawcombe and had at least one child John who was mentioned in Uncle Edward's 'Will' of 1693.
  6. Elizabeth Underhill was possibly born around 1647. She was mentioned in her brother Edward's 'Will' of 1693 as a widow.

  1. There are a number of name variations in the parish records (Underhill, Underill,Undrill, Undririll, Undirill, Undrell, Vndrell, Hunderhill)
  2. There was also a Richard of Puttenden whose wife Mary was buried on 16th December 1702

Wills:

  1. Arthur Underhill (Family ref 2) left a 'Will' that was dated 25th February 1718 and was proved on 18th April 1719 (ref LMA-DW/PA/ 05/1719/128). The link is to an Abstract & a Copy of the Will. The 'Will' mentions his nepthew John Underhill & children (Arthur, Nicholas (under 21), Elizabeth (under 21)) & John's wife Susan; his godchildren John Gunner, John Balcomb, Mary Butcher; Others were Richard Mitchell. Witnesses were Richard Mitchell, John Bryant, William Plumie(?), John Kitelbey.
  2. Edward Underhill (Family ref 4) left a 'Will' that was dated 9th September 1693 and was proved on 9th February 1700 (ref LMA-DW/PA/ 05/1700/095). The link is to an Abstract of the Will. The 'Will' mentions his brother Arthur; his sisters Mary Standford (wife of Edward), Mercy Bawcombe, Elizabeth Underhill (widow); his nephews/neices John Bawcombe,Catherine Underhill, Thomas Underhill, John Underhill, John Standford, Mary Standford, Edward Standford, Thomas Standford, Susanna Standford. Overseers were Thomas Sutton, Thomas Heath. Witnesses were Mary Faulconer, Arthur(?), Pilbure(?), Alexander Luxford.
