Thomas Stripp (1792) & Emily Bones

Thomas Stripp & Emily Bones were not one of my direct ancestors but they are related to me as later indirect generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

Thomas Stripp (Strip) was baptised on 2nd March 1792 in East Grinstead, Sussex, the son of Francis Stripp (& Elizabeth) who was the son of William Stripp 1715 & Elizabeth Underhill. He possibly married Emily Bones on 16th November 1822 in Horsmonden, Kent (source 11). Thomas died in about February 1866 in Godstone RD, Surrey ('aged 75').

Emily Bones birth details are not known. Emily probably died prior to 1841.

Thomas & Emily had three children.
  1. Richard Stripp (Strip) was baptised on 4th January 1824 in Godstone, Surrey (son of Thomas & Emma). He probably married Elizabeth Barnard on 14th October 1846 probably in Lingfield, Surrey (registered in East Grinstead RD). Elizabeth was born on 10th October 1824 in Lingfield, Surrey, the daughter of Newman Barnard & Mary Varnum (note name shown as Barnard, but all other children were Barnett- marriage of Newman shows Barnard). Richard was a sawyer by trade. Elizabeth died in about February 1878 ('aged 53') and Richard died in about November 1893 ('aged 69') both in Godstone RD, Surrey. Richard left a 'Will' dated 16th May 1892 leaving his entire possessions to his daughter Esther. Richard & Elizabeth had nine children.
    1. George Henry Stripp was born in about November 1847 possibly in Godstone, Surrey (Godstone RD)
    2. James Stripp was born in about May 1850 possibly in Godstone, Surrey (Godstone RD). He died in about November 1914 in Godstone Rd, Surrey (' aged 64').
    3. Mary Anne Stripp (Mary Ann) was born in about November 1851 possibly in Godstone, Surrey (Godstone RD). She married William Titchenar circa May 1876 at Godstone RD, Surrey, England. and they had one child Amy Titchenar who was born circa 1879 at Lingfield, Surrey.(source 11)
    4. Thomas Stripp was born in about May 1853 possibly in Godstone, Surrey (Godstone RD)
    5. Richard Stripp was born in about February 1855 possibly in Godstone, Surrey (Godstone RD). Richard married Eliza Humphrey on 19th April 1879 at Burstow Church, Surrey (her father farmed at Outwood). Richard left a 'Will' dated 1919 and he was buried in Lingfield Baptist Chapel in 1928 (source 12). Richard & Eliza possibly had five children (NOTE: all the following information was provided by sources 11 & 12 -unverified by me and not included in my main alpha lists etc).
      1. Henry Richard Stripp was born 28th December 1880 at 15 Addison Road, S. Norwood, Croydon, Surrey. (1881 census shows as Richard H, but BMD birth & marriage shows as Henry Richard). He married Emily Mercy Lane, daughter of Henry Lane and Eliza Field, on 16th September 1901 at Tamworth Road Baptist Chapel, Croydon, Surrey. (Colin Easton -source 11 is related to Emily Lane). Henry married secondly Ruth Payne, daughter of William Payne and Jane (nee Payne), on 6th April 1917 at Station Road Baptist Chapel, Redhill, Surrey. He was a carpenter in 1901, he was widowed on 23rd July 1914 and he was a Builder and Decorator in 1927. Henry died on 12th June 1958 in Carshalton, Surrey, aged 77 and he was buried at Queens Road Cemetery, Croydon, Surrey, England, Grave No. 34296 Plot BB3. Henry & Emily had four children (a-d) and Henry & Ruth had four children (e-h).
        1. Dorothy May Stripp was born on 6th May 1902 at Croydon, Surrey, England.  She married Horace Stannard, son of Jesse Stannard and Sarah Bosett, circa February 1924 at England and had three children (David Robin, Raymond H, Laurence Michael).  She died in June 1974 at England aged 72, and was buried at The Churchyard, Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, Oxfordshire.
        2. Emily Mercy Stripp was born on 22nd June 1903 at Croydon, Surrey, England.  She married Stephen Thomas Hover, son of William Stephen Hover and Ethel Lois Durham, on 5th Dec 1927 at Tamworth Road Baptist Chapel, Croydon, Surrey, England and had two children (Jean Emily & Peter Stephen).  She died on 3rd March 1936 aged 32 and was buried at Baptist Chapel Burial Ground, Borough Green, Kent.
        3. Winifred F. Stripp was born circa 1905 at England; (Her birth is not listed in the National Indexes. Several exhaustive searches have been made, both in London and at Croydon Registry Office). She also went by the nick-name of Popsie.  She emigrated circa 1930; to USA.
        4. Henry Lane Stripp was born on 25th August 1906 at Croydon, Surrey, England.  He died on 9th September 1906 at Croydon, Surrey, England and he was buried on 11th September 1906 at Queens Road Cemetery, Croydon, Surrey, England, Grave No. 9855 Plot BB3.
        5. Henry Roy Stripp was born circa February 1918 at Croydon, Surrey. He changed his name by deed poll to Royston Irving Buchanan and had two sons (Alistair & Benjamin) and he died in 1996 in Cheltenham.
        6. Ruby Stripp was born circa February 1924 at Croydon, Surrey, England.  She died in June 1999 and her funeral took place on 24th June 1999.
        7. Vera Barbara Stripp was born on 13th October 1926 in Croydon, Surrey, England.  She married Arthur Edward Green on 26th March 1951 in Beddington. Vera & Arthur had two children Francis John Green (see source 12) & Martin Hugh Green.Vera died on 20th March 2004 in Southsea.
        8. Ralph Alec Stripp was born on 14th March 1929 at 54 Ashburton Road, Croydon, Surrey, England.  He died circa 12th March 1931 at Croydon, Surrey, England and he was buried on 16th March 1931 at Queens Road Cemetery, Croydon, Surrey, England, Grave No. 9855 Plot BB3.
      2. Elizabeth Stripp was born circa November 1882 at South Norwood, Croydon, Surrey, England.  She married Samuel Beadle, son of James Beedle and Mary Risbridger, circa November 1899 at Croydon Registration District, Surrey, England and had seven children (Samuel, Stanley, Reginald Percy, James, Dorothy Elizabeth, Horace Henry & Frederick).
      3. Hannah Mercy Stripp was born circa February 1887 at South Norwood, Croydon, Surrey, England.  She married an unknown person circa August 1909 at Croydon Registration District, Surrey, England.
      4. Ruth Stripp was born circa February 1889 at South Norwood, Croydon, Surrey, England.  She married James R. Spinks circa August 1913 at Croydon Registration District, Surrey, England.
      5. Alice Stripp was born circa 1894 at South Norwood, Croydon, Surrey, England.
    6. Arthur Stripp was born in about August 1856 possibly in Godstone, Surrey (Godstone RD). He married Annie and had at least one child (Alice)
    7. Esther Stripp (Hester) was born in about May 1859 possibly in Godstone, Surrey (Godstone RD). She inherited the whole of her father's estate from his 'Will' of 1892 as she was "Infirm & Crippled". In the 1891 census the infirmity was recorded as 'Sciatica'.
    8. Caleb Stripp was born in about May 1861 possibly in Godstone, Surrey (Godstone RD)
    9. Charles Stripp was born in about May 1866 possibly in Godstone, Surrey (Godstone RD)
  2. Thomas Stripp (Strip) was born on 9th August 1826 in Godstone, Surrey and was baptised on 3rd September 1826 in Pains Hill Chapel, Oxted, Surrey (a small Independent Evangelical Church, next to Limpsfield Common).
  3. Harriet Stripp (Strip) was born on 26th September 1829 possibly in Horne, Surrey and was baptised as an adult on 13th May 1858 in Godstone, Surrey.

  1. There were numerous differant spellings of "Stripp" in the parish registers eg (Strip, Stripp, Strype, Stripe, Streape, Strape, Streap). 'Streape' tended to be used up to about 1800, 'Strip' was then normally used to about 1840 and then 'Stripp' became the standard.

  1. Richard Stripp (family ref 1) left a 'Will' dated 16th May 1892 and was proved 25th November 1893. The link is to a full readable copy of the 'Will'. In the 'Will' he mentions his daughter Esther; Others were Arthur Wood (executor). THe 'Will' was witnessed by Edward Benjamin Groves & Edward Harfield
