Ralph Shirley

Border
General History

Ralph Shirley  were maybe possibly ancestors of mine, but all the links have yet to be confirmed.

Key Dates:

Ralph Shirley was maybe possibly born in about 1413 possibly in Derbyshire. He possibly married Margaret Stauton, daughter of John Stuaton. He married secondly Elizabeth Blount. Ralph died in about 1466

Possible earlier ancestors were:

Sir Hugh Shirley (b. ca 1351, Shirley, Derbyshire, England; d. 7-22-1403, Shrewbury,
Sussex, England) m. ca 1374,  Wiston, Sussex, England, BEATRICE de BRAOSE
(b. ca 1357, Wiston, Sussex, England; d. 1440), daughter of PETER de BRAOSE and
JOAN de PERCY

Sir Ralph Shirley (b. 4-23-1392, Shirley, Derbyshire, England) m. ca 1411, Shirley,
Derbyshire, England, JOAN BASSET (b. ca 1394, Brailesford, England), daughter of
THOMAS BASSET and MARGARET MERINGER

My only interest here is to attempt to documents the ancestors of the Mid Sussex Shirleys. See also John Shirley 1460. Ancestry line is very unclear

Weedonhill (alias- Woodrow, Woodside or Wood-hill) in Amersham, in Buckingham. Ralph left a 'Will' dated 11 February 1510 and he died in 1510. Ralph & Jane had possibly six children.
    1. Thomas Shirley. He was mentioned in his father Ralph Shirley's 'Will' of 1510 as Thomas Sherley. Thomas married Elizabeth Gorges, dau of Marmaduke Gorges (alias Russell of Horsington, South Cheriton and Hatherley) in the parish of Maperton, Somerset Co.
The manor of West Grinstead, the crown manor, was granted to Thomas West, Lord de la Warr on the accession of Henry VII and retained for only 3 years. Before the year 1504 the manor had passed to Sir Henry Roos who bequesthed it to his wife Matilda. After her death in 1511, the manor devolved to his grandchild, Elizabeth, daughter of Marmaduke Gorges, then wife of Thomas Shirley and thus it became owned by Thomas Shirley.
Thomas Shirley died on 28th April 1544 (see Inquest) and Elizabeth died in about 1573. Thomas & Elizabeth had eight children.
      1. William Shirley was born in about 1524 probably in West Grinstead, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father Thomas Shirley's 'Will' of 1544 as under 21; apparently dead before 1573 since he was replaced as the administrator of his mother Elizabeth's estate. (6 Nov 1573 Eliz Shirley West Grin Co Suss widow , to son Francis Shirley d.b.n.a. by William Shirley admor., also dec. "Nulla bona" declared - Estate Administrations from the PCC. William Sherley of Westgrnested in County of Sussex vs Frances Sherley of same [estate dispute] of father Thomas Sherley, named wife and mother Elizabeth Sherley executrix in Will. Asks for depositions from Frances Sherley, John Grabett, Wm Marston, Stephen Camp, John Gachmonk and Thomas Mathews. [this is an original document at the PRO] - Chancery Records at the PRO)
      2. Francis Shirley was born in about 1533 probably in West Grinstead, Sussex. He was mentioned in his father Thomas Shirley's 'Will' of 1544 as under 21 and probably under 12 (he would be under 21 when brother William was 30). He  inherited the manor of West Grinstead in 1549. (See full Post Mortem Inq record below). Francis married Barbara Blount. Barbara was buried 28th February 1564 in West Grinstead, Sussex ('wife of Francis'). Francis Shirley was buried on 20th March, 1578 in West Grinstead, Sussex. She married firstly Sir George Snelling on 12 July 1606 at St Helen's Bishopgate (inquest says 12 May). He was buried at West Grinstead 16 Apr 1617.
