James Rhodes & Sarah Craggs were one of my 5th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

James Rhodes was baptised on 20th August 1781 in Wriglesworth, Rothwell, Yorkshire, the son of James Rhodes & Sarah Smith. James was shown as a Stonemason in 1822, 1834 & 1841. James was shown in the 1841 census, but not the 1851 census and possibly died in about November 1850 in Hunslet RD, Yorkshire (probably Oulton).

Sarah Craggs birth details are unknown. She had previously married Joseph Craggs and had children from 1794 to 1800, but no records exist for marriages or deaths.

Sarah Haley was born in Hunslet in about 1779. Sarah shown in the 1851 census but not the 1861 census, and possibly died in about November 1857 in Hunslet RD, Yorkshire (probably Oulton).

James Rhodes

Transcript of the entry of "professions and trades" for OULTON in Baines's Directory and Gazetteer Directory 1822. Stone masons : Rhodes James. Transcript of the entry of "professions and trades" for ROTHWELL in Pigot's Directory of 1834. Stone Masons & Merchants, :Rhodes James, Oulton. James was one of seven stone masons or stone merchants in Oulton listed in Pigot's 1841 trade directory. The village was described as "a genteel and agreeable place, with some pretensions to trade, having two tanneries, four maltings, and as many corn mills. In the neighbourhood are some quarries of excellent stone."

From the early 1840's James and his family lived at Mount Pleasant, Oulton, Yorkshire, the only house on Hollow Balk Lane which was later renamed Holmsley Field Lane. This is shown on the 1840's map below. James worked the quarries to the east of Quarry Hill (owned by John Blayds) and to the west of Quarry Hill on land known as Long Croft (owned by John Wing Walker). The next (or previous) houses on the 1841/1851 census were in Quarry Hill.
Mount Pleasant was occupied by later generations of Rhodes until about 1935 and for the period 1840-1911 there were two families living in the house, so was presumably divided up. In one 1911 census (James & Anne) the house is described as having six rooms and in another 1911 census (Sarah & Emily) as having four rooms. The house survived until after the Second World War but was eventually demolished to make way for the development of Holmsley Field Court.

Some additional information of James Rhodes and the Oulton Stonemasons can be found at Woodlesford-The Story of a Station

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. There were numerous differant spellings of "Rhodes" in the parish registers e.g Roades, Roads, Rodes, Roide, Roids, Roodes, Royde, Roydes, Rhods, Rhodes, Rhoods.
  2. For the period 1759 - 1789 (age at marriage of 16 to age 60 at birth of youngest child), there were two James Rhodes born in Rothwell, nine were born in the adjacent parishes (Leeds & Dewsbury), seven were born in the surrounding parishes ( Birstall & Castleford), and in excess of 35 were born in more distant parishes. There must be some doubt whether this is the correct person due to the shear number of James Rhodes. However the one identified is likely to be correct as the birth date is consistent with age given in 1841 census (date range 1779-1783: 5 year range on census age of 59) and the locations match. What is clear is the the link to the Great Grand parent, Israel Rhodes 1666, is absolutely correct due to the Israel name connection. There is doubt to the parentage shown as there are no Israel's identified within that family group. Further investigation is required of the children of Israel Rhodes of Birstall to see if there is a link from that source.
