James Rhodes (1739) & Sarah Smith

Border
General History

James Rhodes & Sarah Smith were one of my 6th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

James Rhodes was baptised on 29th May 1739 in Woodkirk, Yorkshire, the son of Ephraim Rhodes & Hannah Auman. (Source is IGI & unconfirmed). James was shown as a mason in 1770. He married Sarah Smith on 18th May 1769 in Rothwell, Yorkshire. ( In "York Marriage Bonds and Allegations Index  1613-1839"-British Origins: James was shown as age 26 of Rothwell and Sarah age 23 of Rothwell - date shown as 16th May 1769).

Sarah Smith was born 17th April 1745 in Wriglesworth, Rothwell, Yorkshire. She was the daughter of Joseph Smith & Elizabeth Pearson. She was buried on 20th December 1795 in Woodlesford, Yorks (' aged 51'). (Note: Woodlesford, Oulton and Rothwell are all very close to each other).

  1. There were numerous differant spellings of "Rhodes" in the parish registers e.g Roades, Roads, Rodes, Roide, Roids, Roodes, Royde, Roydes, Rhods, Rhodes, Rhoods.
  2. For the period 1721 - 1753 (age at marriage of 16 to age 60 at birth of youngest child), there was no James Rhodes born in Rothwell, seven were born in the adjacent parishes (Woodkirk, Leeds,Wakefield & Bately), six were born in the surrounding parishes (Birstall), and a over 26 were born in more distant parishes. What is clear is the the link to the Great Grand parent, Israel Rhodes 1666, is absolutely correct due to the Israel name connection (see son James). There is doubt to the parentage shown as there are no Israel's identified within this family group, but father's occupation is consistent with son's (stone mason). Further investigation is required of the children of Israel Rhodes of Birstall to see if there is a link from that source.

WOODLESFORD, in the parish of Rothwell, "OULTON, in the township of Woodlesford with Oulton.  (A previous name for Woodlesford seems to have been Wriglesworth. There is a long list of alternative spellings over time. It was recorded in the twelfth century as 'Wridlesford'. The gradual change can be traced until in 1596 the use of Wriglesford only requires the change of the final element).
