Israel Rhodes (1813) & Phillis sayner

Border
General History

Israel Rhodes & Phillis sayner were one of my 4th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

Israel Rhodes was baptised on 28th March 1813 in Rothwell, Yorkshire, the son of James Rhodes & Sarah Craggs. He married firstly Elizabeth Brook on 4th January 1836 in Kippax, Yorkshire (source is "York Marriage Bonds and Allegations Index  1613-1839"-British Origins: Israel was shown as age 22 of Oulton and Elizabeth age 21 of Kippax). He married secondly Phillis Sayner on 12th May 1853 in Barwick in Elmet, Yorkshire (Source is certificate- Israel shown as age 40 & widower, son of James; Phillis shown as age 34 and daughter of Abraham). Israel was buried on 2nd February 1886 in Oulton, Yorkshire (shown in register of Hunslet RD as aged 72). Probate was given on 30th March 1886 and he left £286 1s. to his wife.

Elizabeth Brook was baptised on 8th May 1814 in Kippax, Yorkshire. She was possibly the daughter of Richard Brook & Anne. Elizabeth was shown in the 1851 census and possibly died in about November 1852 in Hunslet RD, Yorkshire, (probably Oulton).

Phillis Sayner was born in about 1819 in Pontefract, Yorkshire,  the daughter of Abraham Sayner & Alice. Abraham & Alice later (1841) lived in Hambleton, Yorkshire with other Sayner families.
In 1861 census Abraham is shown as widower, age 76 from Brayton visiting Elias Sayner age 81 (presume brother) also from Brayton. In 1841 census shows Abraham 50, Alice 55 and Filis 20.
Phillis had possibly been a housemaid for the Wilkinson family at Potterton Hall. Phillis died in about November 1896 (aged 78) in Hunslet RD, Yorkshire (probably Oulton).

Personal History Returns to 'Top of Page'

Israel Rhodes

On the 1841, 1851, 1861 & 1881 census and on Francis George's birth certificate, Israel Rhodes occupation was Stone Merchant. On Francis George's marriage certificate both Israel and son Francis are shown as Farmers.

At the time of the 1841 census he and his family were living with or next to his parents James & Sarah in Mount Pleasant, Oulton (see Oulton Map). At the time of the 1851 census he and his family were living at 'Hollow Balk Lane' next door to or with his mother (presumably in Mount Pleasant - the family home of his parents). At the time of the 1861, 71 & 81 census he and his family were living at 'Hollow Balk' (again presumably in Mount Pleasant)'. His brother James & family and were also living there in 1861/71 (and his brother William in 1861).

In 1860 Israel was appointed an Overseer of the Poor for Oulton-cum-Woodlesford. His fellow Overseer was Robert Farrer who was a corn miller and farmer. The workhouse which they controlled was on Quarry Hill. By 1861 Israel's eldest daughters, Hannah and Mary Ann, had left home to work as servants. Their employer was the colliery proprietor Richard Pope who lived at Springfield Villas in the Hyde Park area of Leeds and probably had a business connection with their father.(source Woodlesford-The Story of a Station).

James Rhodes

His Occupation was Cowkeeper at time of 1901 Census. Year of birth shown as 1854 (age 46), whereas in 1881 census year of birth shown as 1855 (age 25). Lived at Mount Pleasant, Oulton.- same place as Father in 1881.
Original occupation shown as Stone Mason in 1881. Cow Keeper consistent with Israel and Francis becoming Farmers.
No children shown in 1901.
Father in law, James Kaye, aged 80 from Hippax! also lived with family at time of 1901 census

John William Rhodes (source Woodlesford-The Story of a Station).

John William, had become a Stonemason and married Henrietta Wilkinson, the daughter of a butcher from Thwaite Gate. They moved to a new house at the top of Hobb Lane on what is now Midland Street. His brother Richard lived next door at the end of Claremont Street and ran a butcher's shop with his wife Margaret Foulding, the daughter of a gardener who had lived at Kirk Deighton near Wetherby. Before her marriage she had been a lady's maid at Bowden Hall in Gloucestershire, the home of wealthy Leeds born cloth merchant, John Dearman Birchall. None of John William Rhodes sons seem to have worked with stone. Percy, born in 1874, was a shoemaker and later became a bricklayer's labourer. His youngest brother, Ernest, became a general labourer. A family story relates that the middle brother, Herbert, who was born in 1879, joined the army briefly and was bought out by his former school master and the vicar. When he got married his father was working as a miner.

After his time in the army Herbert Rhodes went to work for John Robert Favill who was a licensed hawker and general dealer using a horse and cart to deliver items such as paraffin and soap to households and farms in the area. Favill, who came from Holton Le Moor in Lincolnshire, had been a quarry labourer in Headingley. He and his wife, Mary, who hailed from Kirkham near Malton, had first established the dealership in Holbeck before moving to a house on Calverley Road at some point in the 1880s. In 1903 Herbert Rhodes, at the age of 25, married Ann Ellis, the daughter of a Rothwell Haigh miner, and the relationship with his employer was sufficiently strong for them to christen their first child Robert Favill Rhodes after his birth in 1904. A second son, George, followed in 1907, and it appears that Herbert took over the business and house two or three years later just before Mr. Favill, who had no children, died in 1910. Favill's wife outlived him and moved to Chadwick's Terrace on Quarry Hill so a deal may have been struck for Herbert to look after her in her old age with proceeds from the dealership. Herbert Rhodes brought up seven children. It is thought he went back into the the army during the First World War but no records have so far come to light. His fourth son, also called Herbert who was born in 1917, has no memory of being told about his family's connection to the stone trade and even though he had relatives at Mount Pleasant doesn't believe he ever visited them.

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. There were numerous differant spellings of "Rhodes" in the parish registers e.g Roades, Roads, Rodes, Roide, Roids, Roodes, Royde, Roydes, Rhods, Rhodes, Rhoods.
  2. 1881 Census shows birth year as 1813/14. Marriage certificate shows it as 1812/13. Birth date taken from IGI.
Census shows birth place as Oulton but IGI show it as parish of Rothwell. Woodlesford, Oulton and Rothwell are all very close to each other (2 miles) and all in the same parish.
  3. For the period 1803 - 1821 (age at marriage of 16 to age 60 at birth of youngest child), there was one Israel Rhodes born in Rothwell, none were born in the adjacent parishes , one was born in the surrounding parishes ( Birstall), and two were born in more distant parishes. The one identified is very likely to be correct as the birth date is consistent with age given in 1841/61 census & marriage cerificate (date range 1811-1816: 5 year range on census age of 27) and the birth location is consistent with later census.
    1. 28/03/1813 in Rothwell, son of James & Sarah
    2. 26/01/1812 in Tong, Birstall, son of Joshua & Betty
  4. There appears to be two Abraham Sayner’s. One baptised 04/07/1786, son of Amos  Sayner  & Elizabeth Parker in Thornhill. Second baptised 06/03/1787, son of John Sayner and Dorothy in Brayton. The 1841 census shows a Abraham & Alice with daughter filis (Phillis) living in Hambleton which is close to Brayton. 1861 census shows a Abraham (widower) living with his brother Elias and both were from Brayton. However the age is shown as 76 implying a birth year of 1784/1785 . An Abraham Sayner married Alice Brook on 6/03/1810 in Kippax which is equi-distant from Thornhill and Brayton . Alice I think died in about February 1857 in the Selby area which is also near Brayton. Phillis went on to marry Israel Rhodes in Barwick in Elmer which is near to no-where, but Phillis on later census was born in Pontefract.
  5. Hunslet Registration District included Rothwell, Oulton with Woodlesford, Hunslet see http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/hunslet.html
