Thomas Paine & Joan of Westhill were not one of my direct ancestors but may be related to me as later indirect generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

Thomas Payne (Paine) was born in about 1520 in Ardingly, Sussex (derived as no birth record found). He was the son of Edward Payne, the son of Richard Payne. He was mentioned in his father Edward Payne's 'Will' of 1559. He maybe possibly lived at "Westhill" in Ardingly. He married Joan. Joan was buried on 24th April 1568 in Ardingly, Sussex ('Jone Paine, wife of Thomas of Westhill'). Thomas left a 'Will' that was dated 30th March 1573 and he was buried on 3rd April 1573 in Ardingly, Sussex ('Thomas Paine the Elder of Westhill')

  1. Richard Payne (Paine) was born in about 1545 in Ardingly, Sussex (derived as no birth record found). He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1573 as eldest son. He possibly married firstly Margaret. Margaret died on 29th February 1566 and was buried on 10th March in Balcombe, Sussex ('wife of Richard Paine'). Richard married secondly Katherine Balcombe (a widow) on 7th October 1566 in Balcombe, Sussex. Katherine was possily buried on 30th March 1588 in Balcombe, Sussex (unnamed -wife of Richard Paine of Bushe'). Richard & Katherine had possibly ten children.
    1. Joan Payne (Jone) was baptised on 3rd December 1568 in Balcombe, Sussex ('dau of Rychard') and she was buried there on 26th September 1573 ('dau of Richard')
    2. Thomas Payne was baptised on 25th February 1571 in Balcombe, Sussex ('son of Rychard'). He was mentioned in his grandfather Thomas Payne's 'Will' of 1573 as Thomas Paine.
    3. Job Payne was baptised on 9th October 1573 in Balcombe, Sussex ('son of Richard').
    4. Edward Payne was baptised on 15th August 1575 in Balcombe, Sussex ('son of Richard').
    5. Jane Payne was baptised on 29th April 1576 in Balcombe, Sussex ('dau of Richard').
    6. Thomas Payne was baptised on 1st June 1578 in Balcombe, Sussex ('son of Richard').
    7. Richard Payne was baptised on 25th January 1579 in Balcombe, Sussex ('son of Richard').
    8. Job Payne was baptised on 9th October 1580 in Balcombe, Sussex ('son of Richard').?????
    9. Andrew Payne was baptised on 20th January 1583 in Balcombe, Sussex ('son of Richard').
    10. Anne Payne (Annes) was baptised on 24th July 1586 in Balcombe, Sussex ('dau of Richard').
  2. Isabell Payne (Paine) was born in about 1550 in Ardingly, Sussex (derived as no birth record found). She married John Outred on 22nd June 1572 in Ardingly, Sussex (as Isabelle). Isabell was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1573 but unnamed (but was elder sister of Elizabeth) but the 'Will' mentioned his son in law John Outred. Isabelle & John had at least one child (George) who was mentioned in his grandfather Thomas Payne's 'Will' of 1573.
  3. John Payne (Paine) was born in about 1550 in Ardingly, Sussex (derived as no birth record found). He lived at "Westhill". He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1573 as executor. He married Isabell Comber (Cumber) on 24th January 1583 in Ardingly, Sussex ('John of Westhill').
  4. Thomas Payne (Paine) was born in about 1550 in Ardingly, Sussex (derived as no birth record found). He lived at the "Westhill". He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1573 as executor. In 1583 is is shown as owning two pieces of land called Le Hooke and Macony in Ardingly and also Westhill (see Archives item 1). He probably married firstly Elizabeth Ferral on 28th November 1573 in Ardingly, Sussex. Elizabeth was buried on 22nd October 1576 in Ardingly, Sussex ('wife of Thomas Paine of Westhill'). Thomas probably married secondly Joan Vennoull on 9th (or 30th) September 1578 in Ardingly, Sussex. Joan was probably buried on 24th August 1615 in Ardingly, Sussex ('wife of Thomas Paine of Hooke') and Thomas was buried there on 9th January 1616 ('Thomas Paine of Hooke'). .Thomas & Elizabeth had two children (A-B), Thomas & Joan had eight children (C-J).
    1. John Payne (Paine) was baptised on 16th October 1575 in Ardingly, Sussex ('son of Thomas of Westhill') and he was buried there on 2nd November 1575.
    2. Joan Payne (Joane Paine) was baptised on 20th October 1576 in Ardingly, Sussex and was buried there on 21st October 1576 ('Joane dau of Thomas Paine of Westhill').
    3. Thomas Payne (Paine) was baptised on 19th July 1579 in Ardingly, Sussex ('son of Thomas of Westhill').
    4. John Payne (Paine) was baptised on 25th March 1581 in Ardingly, Sussex ('son of Thomas of Westhill').
    5. William Payne (Paine) was baptised on 13th April 1583 in Ardingly, Sussex ('son of Thomas of Westhill').
    6. Richard Payne (Paine) baptised on 5th September 1585 in Ardingly, Sussex ('Ric son of Thomas') and was buried there on 19th September 1585 ('son of Thomas Paine of Westhill').
    7. Edward Payne (Paine) was baptised on 25th December 1586 in Ardingly, Sussex ('son of Thomas of Westhill').
    8. Richard Payne (Paine) was baptised on 2nd November 1589 in Ardingly, Sussex ('son of Thomas of Westhill'). Richard possibly moved to Hooke in Ardingly. (Note: Richard of Hooke' s first son was called Thomas and therefore it is likely that his father was Thomas. Richard died in 1638 a middle aged man so the timescale also fits). Richard married Joan Geale (Joane) on 15th April 1616 in Balcombe, Sussex. Richard was buried on 15th August 1638 in Ardingly, Sussex ('Richard Paine of Hooke, a middle aged man'). Richard & Joan had three children.

      2. Richard Payne (Paine) was baptised on 6th January 1623 in Ardingly, Sussex ('son of Richard of Hooke')
      3. Mary Payne (Paine) was baptised on 20th August 1627 in Ardingly, Sussex ('dau of Richard & Joan of Hooke')
    9. Joan Payne (Paine) was baptised on 3rd December 1592 in Ardingly, Sussex ('Jone, dau of Thomas Paine of Lyod or of Hooke').
    10. Mary Payne (Paine) was baptised on 22nd February 1596 in Ardingly, Sussex ('dau of Thomas Paine').
  5. Elizabeth Payne (Paine) was born in about 1565 in Ardingly, Sussex (derived as no birth record found). She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1573 as youngest daughter
  6. Margaret Payne (Paine) was buried on 4th June 1568 in Ardingly, Sussex ('dau of Paine of Westhill').

  1. Thomas Payne (family ref Top) left a 'Will' that was dated 30th March 1573 which was proved on 9th May 1573 . The link is to a transcript of the 'Will'. In the 'Will' he mentions his sons Richard (eldest son), John (executor), Thomas (executor); his daughters Elizabeth (youngest)+ 1 other; his son in law John Owtredg; his grandchildren Thomas son of Richard & maybe George Owtred son of John; others were Thomas Payne of Stone; witnesses were John Culpepper (Parson of Ardinglye); Richard Pillbeame, Thomas Stone, Thomas Gatlad, Rychard Busley, Robert ...., John Brytt;  Nycholas ..... and James Iynk.

    1. 7th January 1583 Thomas Payne held two pieces of land called Le Hooke and Macony in Ardingly containing in total 20 acres and a parcel of one virgate of land called West Hill alias Bredens (original in latin).
