Border
General History

William Feldwick & Anne Walker were one of my 7th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

William Feldwick was baptised on 3th June 1729 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was the son of Thomas Feldwick & Jane Dungate. He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1748. He married Anne Walker on 19th November 1752 in Withyham, Sussex (' William of West Hoathly & Ann'). William left a 'Will' that was dated 17th February 1807 and he was said to be of Edenbridge. William was probably buried on 26th November 1808 in Crowhurst, Surrey ('aged 79').

Anne Walker birth details are unknown.

William & Anne had eight children.

Anne Audrey Mary William Priscilla Mary Elizabeth Joseph
  1. Anne Feldwick (Felswick) was baptised on 25th April 1754 in West Hoathly, Sussex. Anne married William Ray on 1st April 1782 in Edenbridge, Kent (witnessed by Joseph Feldwick). She was mentioned in her father William Feldwick's 'Will' of 1807 as Anne Ray and in her bother Joseph Feldwick's 'Will' of 1830 as Anne Ray, deceased. Anne & William had at least three children.
    1. Michael Ray was mentioned in her uncle Joseph Feldwick's 'Will' of 1840. He was mentioned in his uncle Joseph Feldwick's 'Will' of 1830.
    2. William Ray was mentioned in her uncle Joseph Feldwick's 'Will' of 1840. He was mentioned in his uncle Joseph Feldwick's 'Will' of 1830.
    3. Thomas Ray was baptised on 8th September 1793 in Edenbridge, Kent.
  2. Audrey Feldwick was baptised on 8th August 1755 in West Hoathly, Sussex and she was buried there on 2nd December 1755 (' daughter of William, aged 5 months').
  3. Mary Feldwick was baptised on 30th November 1756 in West Hoathly, Sussex and she was buried there on 13th May 1757 (' daughter of William & Ann, aged 3 months'). (Note other sources (eg Sxf & transcript) show day as 18th but transcription error).
  4. William Feldwick was baptised on 20th August 1758 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He married Elizabeth Wood 26th December 1787 in Crowhurst, Surrey (banns issued on 9th,16th & 23rd December). Elizabeth Wood was shown of the Parish of Edenbridge, Kent and the marriage was witnessed by William Ray (see above) & John Gatland. William was mentioned in his father William Feldwick's 'Will' of 1807. William married secondly Diana Green on 1st April 1808 in Tandridge, Surrey (William shown as widower and Diana a widow- Diana was previously Diana Clements-see archive). Diana was buried on 2nd November 1816 in Limpsfield, Surrey, aged 70. William was buried on 20th June 1820 in Edenbridge, Kent ('aged 61'). He was mentioned in his brother in law John Wood's 'Will' of 1829 as "late of Limpsfield". He was mentioned in his bother Joseph Feldwick's 'Will' of 1830, but NOT shown as deceased (but assume this was an error). He is commemorated on his brother Joseph's gravestone in Edenbridge (see documents below), but it is unclear if he was actually buried there. (There is a query here as the date of death on the gravestone is shown as 14th June 1829 and his age as 65 indicating that possibly the gravestone details are not correct). William & Elizabeth had two children.
    1. William Feldwick was born on 17th March 1788 in Limpsfield, Surrey and was baptised there on 6th April. He was mentioned in his uncle Joseph Feldwick's 'Will' of 1830. He was mentioned in his uncle John Wood's 'Will' of 1829. (Christa Taylor in Western Australia provided information that stated that William married Diana Green's daughter, Sophia (born 1783), on 16 October 1806 in Limpsfield. and had a daughter, Diana Feldwick, from whom Christa Taylor is descended).
    2. John Feldwick was born on 27th April and was baptised on 10th May 1789 in Limpsfield, Surrey. He was buried there on 31st January 1796 (shown as Fieldwick).
  5. Priscilla Feldwick was born on 20th December and was baptised on 31st December 1760 in Crowhurst, Surrey. She married Thomas Groombridge (or Grumbridge) on 29th September 1788 in Crowhurst, Surrey (marriage witnessed by sister Elizabeth Feldwick). Priscilla Groombridge was buried on 27th February 1804 in Crowhurst, Surrey. She was mentioned in her father William Feldwick's 'Will' of 1807 as Priscilla Grumbridge, deceased and in her bother Joseph Feldwick's 'Will' of 1830 as Priscilla Groombridge, deceased. Priscilla & Thomas had at least three children (Jane, Lydia & George Groombridge who were mentioned in their grandfather William Feldwick's 'Will' of 1807 and their uncle Joseph Feldwick's 'Will' of 1830)
  6. Mary Feldwick was baptised on 3rd July 1763 in Crowhurst, Surrey. She married William Tidey. She was mentioned in her father William Feldwick's 'Will' of 1807 as Mary Tidy, deceased as was her husband William. She was also mentioned in her bother Joseph Feldwick's 'Will' of 1830 as Mary Tidy, deceased. Details of William Tidey & Mary Feldwick are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
  7. Elizabeth Feldwick was baptised on 12th March 1767 in Crowhurst, Surrey. She married Thomas Bennett on 6th February 1793 in Crowhurst, Surrey (married by license- Thomas Bennett, of the parish of Lympsfield and a Minor). Elizabeth Bennett was buried on 12th August 1797 in Crowhurst, Surrey. She was mentioned in her father William Feldwick's 'Will' of 1807 as Elizabeth Bennet, deceased and in her bother Joseph Feldwick's 'Will' of 1830 as Elizabeth Bennet, deceased. Elizabeth & Thomas had at least two children (William & Thomas Bennet who were mentioned in their grandfather William Feldwick's 'Will' of 1807. William was also mentioned in his uncle Joseph Feldwick's 'Will' of 1830.).
  8. Joseph Feldwick was baptised on 25th November 1773 in Crowhurst, Surrey. He was mentioned in his father William Feldwick's 'Will' of 1807 as executor. Joseph left a 'Will' that was dated 8th September 1830 and he was said to be of Edenbridge. He died on 7th May and he was buried on 12th May 1840 in Edenbridge, Kent ('aged 66'). A gravestone for Joseph is in St Peter and St Paul’s  churchyard,  Edenbridge (see documents below)

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. There were numerous differant spellings of "Feldwick" in the parish registers eg Feldwick, Fieldwick, Feldewick, Feldweeke, Feldwicke, Velvick, Vilfick, Velveck.
  2. For the period 1713 - 1736 (age at marriage of 16 to age 60 at birth of youngest child), there was one William Feldwick born in West Hoathly, two were born in the adjacent parishes and none born in the surrounding parishes. It is probable that the identified William is the correct one.
    1. 03/06/1729 in West Hoathly son of Thomas & Jane
    2. 25/03/1726 in Horsted Keynes son of Henry
    3. 11/10/1730 in Maresfield son of George & Anne
  3. All the children were shown born to William & Anne. In the period 1742-1754, (earliest age at marriage of 16 to year of birth of first child), only one marriage of a William has been identified so the one to Anne Walker is very likely to be correct.
