General History

William Feldwick & Audrey Gibbs were one of my 9th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

William Feldwick was baptised on 16th April 1648 in West Hoathly, Sussex. He was the son of John Feldwick & Anne Payne. He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1662 as under 21, in his mother's 'Will' of 1669 and in his sister Anne's 'Will' of 1675 (as executor). He probably married Audrey Gibbs (or Adrienne Gibb) on 6th May 1675 in Balcombe, Sussex (shown as William Velnick). William left a 'Will' dated 17th November 1722 (shown as a Yeoman of West Hoathly) and he was possibly buried on 15th June 1723 in West Hoathly, Sussex.

Audrey Gibbs's birth details are unknown. Audrey was mentioned in her husband's 'Will' of 1722 (as Adrey) . She was buried on 7th April 1737 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('widow aged 88').

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. There were numerous differant spellings of "Feldwick" in the parish registers eg Feldwick, Fieldwick, Feldewick, Feldweeke, Feldwicke, Velvick, Vilfick, Velveck.
  2. For the period 1636 - 1659 (age at marriage of 16 to age 60 at birth of youngest child), there was one William Feldwick born in West Hoathly, one was born in the adjacent parishes and none born in the surrounding parishes. It is probable that the identified William is the correct one.
    1. 16/04/1648 in West Hoathly son of John & Anne
    2. 15/03/1640 in East Grinstead son of Thomas & Elizabeth. He maybe possibly married Mary Young on 25th October 1677 in East Chiltington, Sussex.
  3. All the children were shown born to William & Adrie. In the period 1656-1676, (earliest age at marriage of 16 to year of birth of first child), only one marriage of a William has been identified so the one to Audrey Gibbs is very likely to be correct.
  4. Some sources do also refer to a Margaret born on 10th October 1682 but the record does not exist in the parish register. Similarly some sources refer to James born 5/11/1688 but is thought to be a duplication of the un-named son born on 5/11/1686 as again it does not appear in the Parish register.
