General History

Thomas Feldwick & Jane Dungate were one of my 8th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

Thomas Feldwick was baptised on 2nd February 1684 in Balcombe, Sussex and was the son of William Feldwick & Audrey Gibb. He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1722. He probably married Jane Dungate on 22nd September 1725 in Pyecombe, Sussex. Thomas left a 'Will' dated 15th October 1748 and was buried on 11th September 1751 in West Hoathly, Sussex. Thomas & Jane had seven children.

Jane Dungate was baptised on 25th December 1695 in Lindfield, Sussex and was the daughter of Joseph Dungate & Anne Dungate. She was mentioned in her grand mother Jane Dungate's 'Will' of 1695. She (as Jane Dungett) was possibly a witness to William Feldwick's 'Will' of 1722. Jane was mentioned in her husband's 'Will' of 1748 and she was buried on 30th April 1790 in West Hoathly, Sussex ('Jane Fieldwick, aged 94, widow of East Grinstead').

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. There were numerous differant spellings of "Feldwick" in the parish registers eg Feldwick, Fieldwick, Feldewick, Feldweeke, Feldwicke, Velvick, Vilfick, Velveck.
  2. For the period 1680 - 1706 (age at marriage of 16 to age 60 at birth of youngest child), there was one Thomas Feldwick born in West Hoathly, and none born in the adjacent or surrounding parishes. It is very probable that the identified Thomas is the correct one.
    1. 02/02/1684 in West Hoathly son of William & Audrey
  3. All the children were shown born to Thomas & Jane. In the period 1700-1725, (earliest age at marriage of 16 to year of birth of first child), only one marriage of a Thomas has been identified so the one to Jane Dungate is very likely to be correct.
