Henry Faulconer & Joan Brett were one of my 12th generation ancestors. 

Key Dates:

Henry Faulconer was baptised on 6th May 1566 in Balcombe, Sussex.  He was the son of Edward Faulconer.   He was of Balcombe and Bentley in Cuckfield and afterwards a yeoman of East Grinstead.  He was mentioned in his father's ‘Will’ of 1588 and was given "one quarter of wheate, one quarter of oten maltt and timber for him to make a tainter. Also I give to him a goode steere now in fattinge". He was executor to his brother Thomas's 'Will' of 1652. Henry married Joan Brett on 7th May 1588 in Balcombe, Sussex. Henry left a'Will' dated 6th November 1632 and was buried in East Grinstead, Sussex on 29th October 1633 (shown as Fawlkner).


Joan Brett was baptised on 13th April 1568!!!! in Balcombe, Sussex and was the daughter of Richard Brett (source 1).  She was buried on 30th June 1632 in East Grinstead, Sussex ('wife of Henry Fawkner').

Henry Faulconer & Joan Brett had nine known children:

  1. Thomas Faulconer was baptised on 29th June 1589 in Balcombe.  He was mentioned in his father's ‘Will’ of 1632.  As Thomas Falkner, (& also Faukner), he probably married Margaret Underhill (or Undrell) by license on 28th August 1615 in Twineham, Sussex.  Their marriage license was issued at Lewes on 26th August 1615 and showed Margaret Undrell as a widow of Twineham with sureties provided by Henry Falkner of Eastgrinsted, yeoman, and Richard Ridge of Balcombe, yeoman of Twineham.
  2. Joan Faulconer was baptised on 4th July 1591 in Balcombe.  She was mentioned in her father's ‘Will’ of 1632 (as Joan, wife of Robert Drewe).  As Joan Faulkner she married Robert Drew (Drewe) on 20th January 1617 in East Grinstead. He was of ‘Brokehurst’ in East Grinstead.  Joan was buried on 14th April 1638 in East Grinstead, Sussex ('wife of Robert'). Robert died on 29th January 1642 (not shown in register) and he left a ‘Will’ that was dated 21st January 1642 and proved on 31st March 1642.  Robert and Joan had six children:
    1. Joan Drew was baptised on 18th December 1617 in East Grinstead, Sussex.  She was mentioned in her grandfather Henry Faulconer's ‘Will’ of 1632. She was aged 21 or more in 1642.
    2. Susan Drew was baptised on 22nd January 1624 in East Grinstead, Sussex. She was mentioned in her grandfather Henry Faulconer's ‘Will’ of 1632.  She married Edward Shearman, junior of Cuckfield.  They had one child: Drew Sherman who was 5 months in 1642.
    3. Anne Drew was baptised on 3rd December 1625 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
    4. Mary Drew was baptised on 29th August 1627 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
    5. Bridget Drew was baptised on 13th July 1628 in East Grinstead, Sussex.  She was aged 14 or more in 1642. She was mentioned in her grandfather's ‘Will’.
    6. Robert Drew was baptised on 12th June 1631 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
  3. Anne Faulconer (Ann) was baptised on 4th June 1594 in Balcombe. 
  4. Agnes Faulconer was buried on 9th September 1615 in East Grinstead (daughter of Henry Faulkner).
  5. Susan Faulconer was baptised on 1st May 1597 in Balcombe.  She was buried on 1st July 1612 in East Grinstead (shown as Fawkener).
  6. Dorothy Faulconer (Falconer) was baptised on 31st August 1600 in Cuckfield, Sussex.  She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1632 (un-named deceased wife of Thomas Ellis) and in her uncle Thomas Faulconer's wills.  As Dorothy Fawkner she married Thomas Ellis on 19th June 1628 in East Grinstead.  He was also mentioned in his father-in-law's and wife's uncle Thomas's ‘Wills’.  They had six children Thomas Ellis & John Ellis were mentioned in their grandfather Henry Faulconer's ‘Will’ of 1632. Her uncle Thomas Faulconer's ‘Will’ mentions 4 others.
  7. Henry Faulconer was baptised on 19th December 1602 in Cuckfield. He was mentioned in his father's ‘Will’ of 1632 ( as executor and residual beneficiary). He married Mary.  Details of Henry Faulconer & Mary are shown separately .
  8. John Faulconer (shown as Fawlkner) was baptised on 27th October 1605 in Cuckfield. He was mentioned in his father's ‘Will’ of 1632. He married Elizabeth Blundell. Details of John Faulconer & Elizabeth Blundell are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
  9. Edward Faulconer (shown as Faucknoure) was baptised on 30th October 1608 in East Grinstead.  He was mentioned in both his father's and his uncle Thomas's ‘Wills’.  At the time of his great uncle Thomas’s ‘Will’ of 1650, Edward had two children.

  1. Source 1 shows marriage date as 7th May 1588 whereas Source 2 shows it as 7th February 1589.
  2. There were numerous differant spellings of "Faulconer" in the parish registers eg (Fawlkner,Faucknore,Faulkner, Faukner,Fawkner, Faucknoure, Fackner )

Wills

  1. Henry Faulconer (Family ref top) left a ‘Will’ that was dated 6th November 1632 and was proved on 6th March 1634 (ref Lewes A23.P98).  The link is to a Transcript of the 'Will'. The 'Will' mentions his sons: Thomas, John, Henry (executor and residual beneficiary) ; his daughters Joan (wife of Robert Drewe), un-named deceased wife of Thomas Ellis; his grandchildren Henry, Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Edward children of John; Joan Drewe & Susan Drewe children of Joan; Thomas Ellis & John Ellis children of un-named daughter ; Overseers were Thomas Dyne of Eastgrinsted and Richard Constable of Ashurst in Kent ; Witnesses were John Underhill, Nicholas Constable
