William Dungate & Joan were not one of my direct ancestors but they are possibly related to me as later generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

William Dungate was born in about 1510, possibly in Horsham, Sussex. He married Joan (Johan). Joan was buried on 2nd March 1559 in Horsham, Sussex ('wife of William'). He married secondly Eleanor Mills (Milles) on 27th January 1567 in Horsham, Sussex (shown as Dongett, & Eleanor a widow). Eleanor was buried on 29th April 1594 in Horsham, Sussex ('Elnor Dongett, wife of William').

  1. Thomas Dungate was born about 1535 probably in Hosham Sussex (derived as no birth record found). Thomas maybe possibly married Agnes and had three children.
    1. Abraham Dungate (Downgat) was baptised on 5th December 1555 in Horsham, Sussex (dau of Thomas & Agnes)
    2. Grace Dungate (Dongett) was baptised on 22nd March 1558 in Horsham, Sussex (dau of Thomas) and she was buried there on 14th March 1559 ('daughter of Thomas Donget').
    3. Thomas Dungate (Dongat) was buried on 26th January 1559 in Horsham, Sussex.
  2. Thomas Dungate was born about 1555 probably in Hosham Sussex (derived as no birth record found and is probably a son of one of the other children). Thomas was a Tanner. Thomas married firstly Elizabeth Niblet on 18th October 1570 in Horsham, Sussex (shown as Dongett & Elizabeth a widow & Thomas as young 'juvenis'). He married secondly Joan Voice on 29th June 1586 in Horsham, Sussex (shown as Dongett, & Joan a widow). Joan was possibly buried on 6th June 1613 in Horsham, Sussex ( un-named , wife of Thomas Dongate'). Thomas left a 'Will' proved on 19th Jan 1634 and was possibly buried on 29th June 1627 in East Grinstead, Sussex.
    1. Dorothy Dungate (Donget) was baptised on 2nd October 1572 in Horsham, Sussex (dau of Thomas)
    2. John Dungate (Dongat) was baptised on 30th October 1575 in Horsham, Sussex (son of Thomas - also shown in Slaugham register). John was a Tanner. John left a 'Will' proved on 14th September 1652 and was shown of West Hoathly.
    3. Elizabeth Dungate (Dongat) was baptised on 18th April 1578 in Horsham, Sussex (dau of Thomas & Elizabeth). She possibly had possibly four children baseborn.
      1. Margaret Dungate (Dongatt) was baptised on 7th May 1595 in Horsham, Sussex (dau of Elizabeth).
      2. Anne Dungate (Dongat) was baptised on 15th April 1603 in Horsham, Sussex (dau of Elizabeth).
      3. Roger Dungate was buried on 15th July 1606 in Horsham, Sussex ('baseborn').
      4. Henry Dungate was baptised on 21st February 1608 in Horsham, Sussex (son of Elizabeth) and he was probably buried there on 10th December 1614 ('child, Dongat').
    4. Alice Dungate (Dongat) was baptised on 23rd February 1581 in Horsham, Sussex (dau of Thomas & Elizabeth)
    5. Anne Dungate was born about 1580 probably in Horsham Sussex (derived as no birth record found). She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1634 (see also archives item 2). She married John Hosmer on 9th April 1639 in Frant, Sussex (license issued at Lewes on 6th April- Ann shown of Mayfield and John of Rotherfield).
    6. Margert Dungate (Dungett) was baptised on 1st January 1587 in Horsham, Sussex (dau of Thomas & Joan) She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1634 (see also archives item 2).
  3. William Dungate was born about 1540 possibly in Horsham, Sussex (derived as no birth record). He was buried on 11th May 1568 in Horsham, Sussex ('Dongett, vir').
  4. John Dungate was born about 1540 possibly in Horsham, Sussex (derived as no birth record). John possibly married firstly Margaret. Margaret was buried on 12th June 1560 in Horsham, Sussex ('wife of John'). He possibly married secondly Dorothy Wever on 5th May 1561 in Horsham, Sussex (shown as Dongett). Dorothy also shown as a Godmother on 10th September 1561. John was buried on 19th March 1597 in Horsham, Sussex (Dongatt) and Dorothy was buried there on 20th October 1597 ('widow, Dongatt')
    1. John Dungate was born about 1565 possibly in Horsham, Sussex (derived as no birth record). He married Blanche. John was probably buried on 30th June 1596 in Horsham, Sussex ('from Roughie') and Blanche was buried there on 28th February 1609 (' widow of the plague'). John & Blanche had one child.
      1. Beatrix Dungate (Dongat) was baptised on 13th October 1592 in Horsham, Sussex (dau of John & Blanche Dongat) and she was buried there on 1st November 1598 (' dau of John Dongatt').
    2. Richard Dungate (Donget) was baptised on 16th September 1563 in Horsham, Sussex ('son of John'). He married Agnes Foster on 17th November 1588 in Horsham, Sussex (shown as Dongat) and Agnes was buried on 20th October 1590 in Horsham, Sussex ('wife of Richard Dongat'). Richard was possibly buried on 28th November 1620 in West Hoathly, Sussex (' an old man').
    3. Henry Dungate was born about 1565 possibly in Horsham, Sussex (derived as no birth record). He possibly married Joan Adeane on 18th June 1592 in Horsham, Sussex (shown as Dongat). Henry was buried on 5th March 1621 in Horsham, Sussex (householder) and Joan was possibly buried there on 3rd January 1626 ('widow')
  5. Nicholas Dungate was born about 1540 possibly in Horsham, Sussex (derived as no birth record). He married firstly Joan Johnson on 25th January 1560 in Horsham, Sussex (shown as Dongett). Joan was buried on 25th September 1563 in Horsham, Sussex ('wife'). Nicholas married secondly Agnes Wren on 11th June 1564 in Horsham, Sussex (shown as Dongett). Agnes was buried on 21st March 1588 in Horsham, Sussex ('wife of Nicholas, Dongatt) and Nicholas was buried there on 26th August 1593 ('an old man, Dongat). Henry & Joan possily had a child.

  7. Margaret Dungate (Downgat) was baptised on 12th December 1543 in Horsham, Sussex (son of William & Joan).
  8. Alice Dungate (Ales Downgate) was baptised on 11th May 1546 in Horsham, Sussex (son of William & Joan).
  9. Agnes Dungate (Downgat) was baptised on 16th March 1548 in Horsham, Sussex (son of William & Joan) and she was buried there on 15th February 1549 ('daughter of William Downgat)
  10. Richard Dungate (Downgat) was buried on 29th May 1548 in Horsham, Sussex (son of William & Joan Downgat)
  11. Richard Dungate (Downgat) was baptised on 31st January 1552 in Horsham, Sussex (son of William & Margaret?????). He was buried there on 14th November 1552 ('son of William of Rawhethe (i.e. Roffey))
  12. Roger Dungate (Downgat) was baptised on 20th July 1555 in Horsham, Sussex (son of William & Joan) and he was buried there on 30th July 1552 ('son of William & Joan).

  1. There were numerous differant spellings of "Dungate" in the parish registers. eg Dungatt, Dungat, Dunget, Dungett, Dungete Dungatte,Dongat, Dongatt, Dongatte, Donget, Dongett, Dongate, Downgat, Downgate, Doungate, Doungat, Doungett, Donged.
  2. There were a number of references to Godparents in the registers; 29/01/1557 Margaret wife of Thomas Downgat, 01/12/1558 Thomas Dongett, 19/12/1556 John Downgat, 30/08/1562 Joan Donget (virgo), 06/06/1563 John Donget (vir), 10/09/1561 Dorothy Donget (wife).

    John Hosmer of Rotherfield, husbandman, and his wife Anne, Margery Dungate of Mayfield, spinster, to Stephen Penkeherst, of Mayfield, gent Land (3 acres) near Spitlye in Mayfield, abutting E on lands formerly of William Moone and now of SP, S on a lane there, W and N on the common or waste called Spitlye. The land was bequeathed by Thomas Dungate, deceased, in his will, 19 Jan 1634, to his daughters Anne Hosmer and Margery Dungate. He had held the land by grant of John Langridge.
