Roger Comber & Joan were one of my 15th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

Roger Comber (Rogers Rivers Comber) was born in about 1480 possibly in Balcombe, Sussex. He is probably shown in the Lay subsidy Rolls of 1524/25 in the Hundred of Lyndefield Arch as being taxed on assets worth £5. Plantiff in fine for lands in Horsted Keynes in 1524. He married Joan with whom he was defendant for lands in Withyham in 1524.

  2. William Comber was born in about 1520. He was overseer to brother Roger's 'Will' of 1555 and he was executor to his uncle Francis Chaloner's 'Will'.
    1. William Comber was born in about 1549 possibly in Lindfield, Sussex (derived as no birth records found and may not be son of William) and was buried on 19th August 1559 in Lindfield, Sussex ('adolescent') .
    2. Matthew Comber was born in about 1554 possibly in Lindfield, Sussex (derived as no birth records found and may not be son of William). He was mentioned in his uncle Roger's 'Will' of 1555. He possibly married Mary Whydebreade. Details of Matthew Comber & Mary Whydebreade are shown separately.
    3. Henry Comber was born in about 1556 possibly in Lindfield, Sussex (derived as no birth records found and may not be son of William) was buried on 20th February 1560 in Lindfield, Sussex ('child').
    4. John Comber was baptised on 27th April 1560 in Lindfield, Sussex ('son of William'). He married Anne. John left a 'Will' dated 26th February 1605 and he was buried on 5th March 1605 in Lindfield, Sussex. Anne married secondly John Gingo on 18th May 1609 in Lindfield, Sussex (Anne shown as Coomber & a widow). John & Anne had six children.(Note: SxG show Anne as Agnes and show dates as bap 27/09/1560 & bur 05/05/1604)

      2. John Comber was baptised on 26th December 1582 in Lindfield, Sussex ('father is Jo'). (Note: SxG show date as 26/02/1582). He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1605. He possibly married Frances Sargent on 8th October 1606 in Lindfield, Sussex (shown as Coomber). John & Frances had three children.
        1. Barbara Comber (Coomber) was baptised on 15th September 1607 in Lindfield, Sussex (dau of John). (not shown in SxG)

      3. Margaret Comber was baptised on 16th May 1585 in Lindfield, Sussex ('Marget- father is Jo'). (Note: SxG show date as 18/05/1583). She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1605 as under 24.
      4. Mary Comber was baptised on 8th March 1588 in Lindfield, Sussex ('Marye - father is Jo') and she was buried there on 3rd May 1600 ('dau of John')
      5. Agnes Comber (source is SxG only) was maybe possibly baptised on 1st December 1588 in Lindfield, Sussex. She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1605. She possibly married John Potter on 6th February 1610 in Lindfield, Sussex (SxG says 1609 & John Hotler)
      6. Elizabeth Comber was baptised on 10th January 1591 in Lindfield, Sussex (dau of John'). She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1605 as under 24. She possibly married John Rye on 20th June 1614 in Lindfield, Sussex.
      7. Francis Comber was born in about 1593 in Lindfield, Sussex and was buried there on 28th May 1601 ('son of John').

  3. Richard Comber of Combehouse & Combeland in Ardingly was born in about 1520. He was mentioned in his brother Roger's 'Will' of 1555. He married Joane. Richard left a 'Will' dated 29th January 1593 and was buried on 31st January 1593 in Ardingly, Sussex (shown as Cumber & a householder). (SxG show as 1592). See also Archives-Post Mortem. Joan was buried there on 13th April 1593 ('widow of Richard late deceased'). Richard and Joan had at least three children.
    1. John Comber was born in about 1550. He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1593 as executor and was aged 30 or more at his father's Inquest in 1594. He married firstly Eleanor Robbines (shown as Elner or Elua, & Rivers Coumber) on 13th May 1571 in Ardingly, Sussex. He married secondly Joan Burley (shown as Joane & Rivers Cumber) on 29th July 1576. He married thirdly Joan Longley on 3rd November 1601 in Ardingly, Sussex (shown as Cumber). John left a 'Will' dated 15th May 1606 and was buried on 23rd March 1618 in Ardingly, Sussex
      1. Richard Comber (Cumber) was baptised on 29th September 1576 in Ardingly, Sussex ('son of John'). He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1606. Richard possibly had children.

He was mentioned in his father's 'Will' of 1593, and he inherited Combehouse & Combeland, and he was mentioned in his Father in law Thomas Gatland's will of 1600. He was overseer to his brother John's 'Will' of 1606. He married firstly Elizabeth Gatland (dau of Thomas Gatland of West Hoathly). Elizabeth was buried on 29th November 1613 in Ardingly, Sussex (' wife of Roger'). Roger married secondly Anne Bassett on 23rd June 1618 in Cuckfield, Sussex (Roger of Ardingly). Roger left a 'Will' dated 2nd February 1634 and was buried in Ardingly, Sussex on 12th March 1640 ('aged 88 years'). Anne was buried there on 21st March 1649 (Cumber, an ancient widow). (SxG says 1648). Roger & Elizabeth had eight children.
      1. Jane Comber (Cumber) was baptised on 10th (or 15th) September 1583 in Ardingly, Sussex ('dau of Roger'). She married William Baxshell on 22th July 1604 in Ardingly, Sussex.
      2. Elizabeth Comber (Cumber) was baptised on 29th June 1585 in Ardingly, Sussex ('dau of Roger'). She was mentioned in her grand father Thomas Gatland's will of 1600 and in her father's 'Will' of 1634.
      3. Edward Comber was born in about 1587 probably in Ardingly, Sussex. He was mentioned in his grand father Thomas Gatland's will of 1600 and in his father's 'Will' of 1634 as eldest son.

    3. Isabell Comber was born in about 1554. She was mentioned in her father's 'Will' of 1593. She probably married John Payne of Westhill on 24th January 1583 in Ardingly, Sussex.

  2. The name Comber was often shown as Rivers Comber or Rivers alias Comber or Rivers COMBER or just Rivers for families up to about 1615. Families after about 1615 only used the name Comber.

  2. John Comber (Family ref 2 D) left a 'Will' dated 26th February 1605 and was proved 11th April 1605 (Lewes U1. P51).
  3. Richard Comber (Family ref 3) left a 'Will' dated 29th January 1593 and was proved 11th July 1593 (Lewes A9.P187). The link is to a transcript of the 'Will'. The 'Will' mentions his wife Joan; his daughter Isabell Payne; his sons Roger, John (executor). Witnesses were William Smarte, Clerke & John .....,  ...... Payne and Edwarde Payne.

In 1598 on a survey of the Manor of Imberhorne, Thomas Rivers als Comber is recorded as a copyholder in the parishes of East Grinstead & Hoathleigh and that he holds by copy dated 11 Nov 2 Eliz, parcel of a tenement (30 acres) called "Bunsegrove" (bounds Queens Highway Bunsegrove to Horsted Keynes E, Johane Barrendine S & W, Margaret Middleton N) - rent 2s 10d .(note: Elizabeth came to throne in 1558)
    2. In 1598 on a survey of the Manor of Imberhorne, Philip Comber is recorded as a freeholder in the parish of Hoathleigh and that he holds in the right of his wife, lands (24 acres) called "Denmans" and "Sawyers". Denmans bounds Queens Highway from Tyes Cross to Buntsgrove E, Robert Gourde W & S, Queens Highway Tyes Cross to Horsted Keynes N. Sawyers bounds William Vynall E, Robert Gourde W, Edward Egland's White S, lane from Tyes Cross to Buntsgrove N - rent 6s.
