General History

John Colegate & Elizabeth Sale were not one of my direct ancestors but they are probably related to me as later generations of a direct ancestor.

This page centers around people who were members of the Baptist community at Bessels Green

Key Dates:

John Colegate was born on 7th December 1727 (recorded at the Baptist church, Horsham, Sussex (see verification item 5). He was the son of Daniel & Mary Colegate who was possibly the son of John Colegate.
John was probably baptised on 11th September 1748 in the Baptist Chapel, Bessels Green, Sevenoaks, Kent. John married firstly Elizabeth Sale on 28th October 1756 in Chevening, Kent (Elizabeth from Sundridge).
John married secondly Elizabeth who died on 26th October 1777 and was buried in the Baptist Chapel, Bessels Green, Sevenoaks, Kent.
John married thirdly Esther Collins on 5th March 1779 in Chevening, Kent. Esther died on 19th January 1797 and was buried on 22nd January 1797 in the Baptist Chapel, Bessels Green, Sevenoaks, Kent (shown as wife of John of Turvis Farm, Chevening, aged 62).
John was shown to be a member of the Baptist Chapel in 1771 & 1783. John died on 13th January 1801 and was buried in the Baptist Chapel, Bessels Green, Sevenoaks, Kent. (Inscription shows- 'aged 74 , late of Turbins').

Elizabeth Sale was baptised on 21st March 1732 in Bessels Green, Sevenoaks, Kent, the daughter of David Sale & Martha Hodsoll. (David had married Matha Hodsoll on 28th February 1728 in Fleet Prison, London. ( unconfirmed) and they had seven children and were also members of the baptist chapel). Elizabeth died on 26th January 1771 (aged 38) and was buried in the Baptist Chapel, Bessels Green, Sevenoaks, Kent. (see inscription)

It is unclear how Stephen Colegate is related to this family (probably not related) but they were all Baptists at Bessels Green.

John Colegate: There are also Westerham Assises records that refer to a John Colegate as a Baptist in 1684 & 1710 (see archives). He may have been Stephen's father. John was possibly born in about 1660. His wife died in December 1738 ( recorded in Bessels Green Baptist church as 'un-named, wife of John') and John died on 9th December 1741 and was buried on 13th December in Bessels Green Baptist churchyard.

Stephen Colegate birth details are not known, but he was born in about 1703 in maybe possibly Chevening, Kent (derived as no birth records found - but see inscription). He was baptised on 6th August 1721 in the Baptist Chapel, Bessels Green, Sevenoaks, Kent. Stephen married Martha Calverly (or Caffyn) on 28th October 1729 in Cudham, Kent (' Stephen shown as of Tatsfield'). Martha was baptised on 7th November 1725 in the Baptist Chapel, Bessels Green. Stephen died on 5th January and was buried on 11th January 1764 at Bessels Green, Sevenoaks, Kent ('aged 61'). Martha died on 7th October 1776 and was buried at Bessels Green, Sevenoaks, Kent. Personal History Returns to 'Top of Page'

Baptists in Bessells Green

The 'Old Meeting House' Baptist group, which was founded 1716 as a baptist chapel, becoming Unitarian around 1800 and is now called the Sevenoaks Unitarian Church. It lies a few hundred yards east of the green, on the south side of the main road (the A25) at 5 Westerham Road, Bessels Green. It’s known as the Old Meeting House, to distinguish it from Bessels Green Baptist Church which was founded in 1769 by a splinter group from the congregation, and also thrives today. The information shown for Bessels Green Baptist Chapel is taken from the North West Kent Sevenoaks CD which contains Baptisms & Marriages taken from records held at Sevenoaks library and Burials from the Public reord office in Chancery Lane.

Besides the Baptist community at Horsham, (which Bessels Green is closely associated with), there is another large community in Ditchling, Sussex. See Peter Brown 1689

The minutes of the General Assemby of the General Baptist churches in England were compiled by WT Whitely for the period 1731-1811. (see "Robert Colgate the Immigrant" page 327). These show the following representaions at the Assembly:

  1. Stephen Colgate for Sevenoaks in 1746, 47, 50, 52, 58
  2. Daniel Colgate for Horsham in 1756
  3. John Colgate for Sevenoaks in 1758, 64, 67, 69, 70, 74, 75, 77, 78
  4. John Colgate for Bessels Green in 1781, 84, 86, 90, 93
  5. Robert Colgate for Bessels Green in 1789, 92, 94
  6. David Colgate for Bessels Green in 1797, 1802, 03

Stephen Colegate:

Stephen & Martha were members of the Baptist church at the Old Meeting House, in Bessells Green, near Sevenoaks; this was in the parish of Chevening. Some records derive from Chevening and some from Bessells Green. A lot of baptismal dates are of adults joining the new church. (set up in 1714) and/or when they reached adulthood. Stephen was baptised into the Baptist Chapel on 6th August 1721. Stephen was shown to be a member of the Baptist Chapel in 1732 and he was an assistant minister in 1764.

John Colegate:

John and his family lived at Turvins Farm, Chevening, Kent. This is located about 500m east of Chevening village. He probably died there , however as his third wife died in 1797 there was a period of 4 years after then when he possibly lived elsewhere as he is shown 'late of Turbins'. His son David lived with his young family at at Shoreham Mill, but later children are shown to be born in Chevening so he maybe moved back to Turvins farm in about 1796 and lived there until his own death.

Verification & Concerns Returns to 'Top of Page'

  1. A number of other Colegate's are referred to in the church records; JohnColegate died 9/12/1741 and his wife died 12/1738
  2. It is confusing where people are actually buried .Is the service at Bessels Green and actual burial elsewhere. Similarly baptisms need clarification
  3. Major dispute area. According to a number of web sites this Robert Colegate (of Sevenoaks) married Sarah Bowles and emigrated to America where his son William founded the Colgate company. A Robert Colegate did marry a Sarah Bowles on 28/03/1780 in Staplehurst, Kent. She was baptised on 11/12/1759 in Maidstone, daughter of John Bowles & Ann Bagnall. The Robert lived in Hollingbourn, Kent when he married (shown in Staplehust parish register) and lived there subsequently as his children were born there (Charlotte 1781, William 1783).
Robert (from Sevenoaks) brother David had children in Chevening, Sevenoaks, sister Charlotte married in Chevening in 1792, sister Mary married in Chevening in 1779 and father John was buried in Chevening in 1801 so one can safely assume that the family did not move to Hollingbourn (5 miles east of Maidstone and over 21 miles from where the family lived in Chevening). If Robert moved on his own he was quite young to do so (under 20 probably as he would have then married at age 21) and this would be very unusual.
There is also a web site that shows a gravestone in Andes, NY of the Robert who went to America. http://haystack.colby-sawyer.edu/items/show/11376 The birth date on the gravestone is shown as 1st September 1768 and he died July 26th 1826. Picture held by Cleveland Colby Colgate Archives.
One can therefore conclude that the Robert in Hollingbourn (with Sarah Bowles) and the Robert who went to America are probably NOT the Robert from Sevenoaks. There were also a number of other Robert Colegates born in this period
    1. Baptised 14/09/1743 in Framfield, Sussex the son of Robert & Mary (Parish Transcript)
    2. Baptised 12/01/1746 in Meopham, Kent the son of Robert & Elizabeth (family search)
    3. Baptised 07/02/1747 in Seal, Kent the son of John (other history source)
    4. Baptised 16/08/1752 in Davington, Kent (10 miles from Hollingbourn), the son of William & Mary (family search) (maybe married Esther Blaxland, bap. 14 Jul 1754, Graveney, Kent, England, m. 21 Jun 1781, in Graveney, Kent, England, Robert Colgate. Esther died 17 Apr 1798. )
    5. Baptised 23/09/1768 in Bexley, Kent the son of Robert Colegate & Abigall. (family search)
If the birth date on the gravestone is correct then the Robert born in Bexley would be a more likely candidate, but then he would be too young to marry Sarah Bowles and have son William born in 1783.
  4. There are records of a Stephen Colegate in Cowfold Sussex in 1711 and there are also baptist church records in Horsham with a number of Colegates shown. The Bessels Green records do refer to people being recommended to or received from Horsham
  5. John Colegate is linked from the Horsham baptist church to the Bessels Green baptist chapel by age at death (age 74 so born 1726/27) and more importantly the death of his daughter Elizabeth. Her birth & death are recorded at Bessels Green. However the death of an Elizabeth Colegate daughter of John & Elizabeth on 17th January 1761 aged 3 years 10 months is also recorded in the Horsham Baptist church- (the January date is presumed to be a transcription error and should be June-microfim needs to be checked). In addition John's brother Daniel moved from Horsham to Orpington and was also buried at Bessels Green Chapel.
  6. A book "Robert Colgate the Immigrant" was written in 1941 detailing a number of Colgate ancestors, and in particular the ancestry of William Colage the founder of the Colgate company. Some of the details are in comflict with my comments above. According to RCTI Robert had children Charlotte (4/1/1781), William (25/1/1783), Maria (28/12/1784), Hannah (1/2/1787) all born in Hollingbourn ; Bowles (14/01/1789), Esther (6/1/1791), Lydia (10/03/1793) all born at Filston Farm, Shoreham; John (23/8/1795), George (2/11/1793), Harriet (23/7/1800) & Charles (6/2/1805) all born in USA.
