John Colegate were not one of my direct ancestors but they are probably related to me as later generations of a direct ancestor.

Key Dates:

John Colegate was born in about 1650 maybe possibly in Cowfold, Sussex. He was a brasier (worked with brass) and lived in Cowfold, Sussex. His ancestry is unclear. He was buried on 5th March 1739 in Cowfold, Sussex.

John maybe possibly had maybe two children, but probably more.

Stephen
  1. Stephen Colegate was born in about 1680, possibly in Cowfold, Sussex. He married Sarah Linser on 7th June 1705 in West Grinstead, Sussex (shown as Stephen Colgate of Henfield). Stephen was buried on 25th May 1712 in Cowfold, Sussex. Sarah was buried on 24th October 1746 in Cowfold, Sussex.
    1. John Colegate (Colgate) was baptised on 22nd August 1706 in West Grinstead, Sussex (son of Stephen & Sarah). He possibly died on 13th December 1741 and was buried at Horsham Baptist chapel.
    2. Elizabeth Colegate was baptised on 19th January 1709 in Cowfold, Sussex (dau of Stephen & Sarah) and she was buried there on 12th March 1716 (source RCTI)
    3. Stephen Colegate was baptised on 11th November 1711 in Cowfold, Sussex (son of Stephen & Sarah). He married Susanna Woolven on 9th May 1758 in West Grinstead, Sussex (shown as Colgate). Susanna was buried on 30th July 1762 in West Grinstead, Sussex ('wife of Stephen'). Stephen left a 'Will' dated 2nd May 1794 and was buried on 30th October 1794 in West Grinstead, Sussex.
  2. Daniel Colegate was possibly born in about 1701 in possibly Cowfold, Sussex (derived as no birth records found and may not be a son of John- as possibly from Battle). He was a brasier and was apprenticed to John Colegate, armourer & brasier of Cowfold, in 1715 (unconfirmed). He married Mary Burgess on 6th May 1725 in Fleet Prison (see Items of Interest -Fleet Prison for explanation). Daniel Colgate was shown as a 'Brasier', of Battle in Sussex and Mary was of Shoreham in Kent (see link to son John Colgate below). Daniel left a 'Will' dated 14th December 1767 and he died on 31st January 1768 (aged 67) and was buried in the Baptist church at Horsham, Sussex. Mary was mentioned in her husband's 'Will' of 1767 (as executor).
    1. Eleanor Colegate (Colgate) was born on 22nd October 1726 probably in Horsham, Sussex (recorded in baptist church, Horsham).
    2. John Colegate (Colgate) was born on 7th December 1727 probably in Horsham, Sussex (recorded in baptist church, Horsham) (RCTI says 18/12). He was mentioned in his father Daniel Colegate's 'Will' of 1767. He married Elizabeth Sale. Details of John Colegate & Elizabeth Sale are shown separately.
    3. Mary Colegate (Colgate) was born on 13th July 1729 probably in Horsham, Sussex (recorded in baptist church, Horsham). She was mentioned in his father Daniel Colegate's 'Will' of 1767.
    4. Stephen Colegate was possibly born in about 1733 in possibly Horsham, Sussex. He was a brasier and he married Sarah Cooper on 22nd July 1760 in Billingshurst, Sussex. He left a 'Will' dated 27th April 1766 and he died on 24th August 1766 (aged 33) and was buried in the Baptist church at Horsham, Sussex. Sarah died on 8th May 1808 (aged 75, widow) and was buried in the Baptist chapel at Horsham, Sussex. Stephen & Sarah had two children.
      1. Samuel Colegate was possibly born in about 1760 in possibly Horsham, Sussex. He was mentioned in his grandfather Daniel Colegate's 'Will' of 1767 as under age 14.
      2. Anne Colegate (Colgate) was possibly born in about 1763 in possibly Horsham, Sussex. She was mentioned in her grandfather Daniel Colegate's 'Will' of 1767 as under age 21. Anne died on 13th September 1806 ('aged 42') and was buried in the Baptist chapel at Horsham, Sussex.
    5. Daniel Colegate (Colgate) was born in about 1735 in possibly Horsham, Sussex. He married Margaret and later moved to Orpington in Kent. He was a brasier (unconfirmed-RCTI). He was mentioned in his father Daniel Colegate's 'Will' of 1767 (as trustee) and he was mentioned in his brother Stephen's 'Will' of 1766 (as trustee). He died on 11th February 1806 (aged 71) and was buried in the Bessels Green Baptist Chapel (see inscription below). Margaret died on 3rd October 1812 (aged 72) and was buried in the Bessels Green Baptist Chapel (see inscription below). Daniel & Margaret had at least two children.
      1. John Colegate (Colgate) was born in about 1769.
      2. Margaret Colegate (Colgate) was born in about 1772. Margaret died on 29th September 1832 (aged 63!) and was buried in the Bessels Green Baptist Chapel (see inscription below).
    6. Ano Colegate was born in about 1735 in possibly Horsham, Sussex. They died on 5th January 1738 (un-named child of Daniel) and was buried in the Baptist chapel at Horsham, Sussex.

  1. Daniel Colegate (family ref 2) left a 'Will' dated 14th December 1767 and was proved on 11th May 1768 (Ref Chichester STC I/42/1) . The link is to a transcript of the 'Will'. The 'Will' mentions his wife Mary (executor) ; his sons: John, Daniel (both trustees) ; his daughter Mary ; his grandchildren Samuel (under 14), Anne (under 21). Witnesses were Stephen Rowland, Daniel Greenfield, Daniel Rowland
