Border
General History

John Bland & Fanny France were one of my 4th generation ancestors.

Key Dates:

John Bland was born on 24th September 1826 in Easingwold, North Yorkshire, the son of Thomas Bland & Hannah Johnson . He married Fanny France in about November 1849 in Hull RD, East Yorkshire. John died in about August 1902 (aged 76) probably in Snaith (in the registration district of Goole).

Fanny France was baptised on 18th April 1824 in Cowick, Snaith, Yorkshire, the daughter of Peter France & Fanny Green. Fanny died in about November 1911 (aged 86) probably in Snaith (in the registration district of Goole). In 1911 she was living at North view, George Steet, Snaith.

John & Fanny had five children (see 1911 census).

William Anne Ada Peter Fanny
  1. William Bland was born in about August 1850 in Dewsbury RD, Yorkshire (possibly in Bately) and died in about November 1850 in Dewsbury RD, Yorkshire. (It is unconfirmed that he was a son of John & Fanny but timescale & census fits).
  2. Anne Elizabeth Bland was baptised on 30th May 1852 in Bately, Yorkshire. (Source is IGI) and was registered in Dewsbury RD in May 1852. Anne was a dress maker. In 1911 she was shown as single and living with her mother in Snaith.
  3. Ada Bland was born in about November 1853 in Dewsbury RD, Yorkshire (possibly in Bately Carr). She probably married Henry Thompson in about May 1879, in Shardlow, Derbyshire. (Henry Thompson was born in Swinton and his father was George Staniforth Thompson.  In the censuses of 1861 and 1871 the family was living in Swinton next door to Luke Settle and Elizabeth (nee France) Settle and family.  Elizabeth France would be an aunt to Ada (see Peter France (1789) & Fanny Green). After Ada and Henry married they lived in Snaith in 1881 next door to John Dealtry, Mary (nee France) Tuke and Ann France (see Peter France (1789) & Fanny Green).   Ada was shown on the 1901 census but was missing on the 1911 census.  It is thought that Winifred, her oldest daughter, went to the States in 1906 to visit her uncle Walter Thompson who  was living in Frankford, Penn. She was a music teacher.  By 1911 she was back and both she and Ada were staying (as visitors) with a man called Stavens in Scarborough.  - all source 7).
Ada Thompson probably died in Snaith (Goole) in about February 1939,  aged 85. Ada & Henry had possibly five children.
    1. Winifred May Thompson was born in about 1879 in Snaith, Yorshire and was living in 1911 in Scarborough.
    2. Harry R Thompson was born in about 1882 in Snaith, Yorshire and was living in 1891.
    3. Dora M S Thompson was born in about 1885 in Snaith, Yorshire and was living in 1911.
    4. John E Thompson was born in about 1889 in Snaith, Yorshire and was living in 1911 (but was not shown on the 1901 census).
    5. Walter H Thompson was born in about 1891 in Snaith, Yorshire. He lived almost immediately with Peter France Bland (in 1891 census). He was shown as also living there in 1901/1911 (shown as nephew).
  4. Peter France Bland was born in about August 1856 in Goole RD, Yorkshire (probably in Snaith). He married Mary Ellen Jackson in about February 1883 in Goole RD, Yorkshire.Mary was born in about 1866 in Hemsworth. In 1911, Peter & Mary were still living in Snaith. Peter & Mary had possibly two children.
    1. Eva Maria Bland was born in about August 1883 in Goole RD, Yorkshire (probably in Snaith). In 1911 she was shown as single, living with her parents in Snaith.
    2. Mary Anne Bland was possibly born in about May 1888 in Goole RD, Yorkshire (probably in Snaith) and died there the same month. (Note: she may not be a daughter of Peter & Mary- see 1911 census).
  5. Fanny Mary Hannah Bland was born on 22nd February 1859 in Snaith, Yorkshire and her birth was registered on 5th April 1859 in Goole RD, Yorkshire. She married Francis Rhodes. Details of Francis Rhodes & Fanny Bland are shown separately as they are direct ancestors.
